How do you like it?
We are in the midst of remodeling our home and we are faced with the following choice.
Kitchen and dinette will be in the back of the house and will be closed off with a wall and door. Dining room and living room can either be one great big room (walk in th front door and you are faced with a big room
Or
A hallway leading to the kitchen with a door closing off the dining room
I like the airiness of the open room but I am scared that it will be hard to keep clean, noisy etc.
We do have a playroom in basement- dining room and living room will be mainly used to Shabbos and hosting

if you host a lot go with the open plan.
there are lots of ways to leave the open look - but break up the room so that you don't feel like you are walking in to a huge cavernous room.
we have the open layout with the following:
a - "hallway" where you walk in has tiled floor (rest of room has hardwood)
b - 1/2 wall where you walk in to delineate the hallway. we put a marble top on this 1/2 wall so we can put things down on it when coming in like keys, mail, etc.
c - the walls jut out 1 foot on either side in the spot where the living room and dining room meet to delineate which room is which. (there is real wall there, just the 1 foot on either side and the rest in empty.

I've seen a few good ideas so you can have both the privacy when you want it and the openess when you want it:
1. two floor to ceiling sliding doors that can open or close depending on the state of the kitchen, like this: https://www.google.com/search?.....zM%3A
2. a sliding door or curtain that covers only the part that gets very messy--like the sink/microwave area, while the island or whatever else can still show.
3. make a small part behind the island that is raised so it covers the mess that faces the dining room example: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/.....4037/
4. add a half a wall between the island/bar counter and the rest of the kitchen
