Tzoifia is also a Hebrew word that means ( I think ) to look towards. Like in the song hatikvah ( and I am sure somewhere in the tanach !
Kol od baleivav penimah
Nefesh yehudi homiyah,
Ulfa’atey mizrah kadim
Ayin letsiyon tsofiyah;

Sophia is one the most popular girls' names in the USA right now. Tzofia might be considered a variant spelling by Americans but the "Tz" at the beginning may make it difficult for non-Jewish Americans to pronounce. Zofia would be easier — like Zivia instead of Tzivia.

I do know one Keren — in her 40's... Karen, with an "a", was a popular American girl's name in the 50's and 60's, but not now.

Definitely keren. It's a beautiful name. It's hard for Americans to pronounce the "ts" sound so I wouldn't go with tzophia.

I know a few Kerens who were brought up in America or England. Just be prepared that Keren will be called Karen often.

I voted for Keren since I know one and it sounds nice. I love the name Sophia is that's the same as what you wrote.

In English the "ts" sound can be found in the middle and the end of words — like pizza, nuts, dance — but not at the beginning. That's why many Americans have trouble pronouncing names like Tzofia.

Both are lovely, both fit beautifully with Ellul
I tend more to Tzofia, it is a fresher more modern sounding name (I actually only met one Tzofia outside of Israel). And if someone can't pronounce it, it will just sound like Sophia.

Thank you everyone for your input! I still love both names and meanings, but my husband is not sold and will probably lean toward a slightly more common name... This kind of compromise is worth it for shalom bayis :-)
