Op here I forget the imamother rules of posting. For those telling me about miralax, my daughter is taking a capful daily for a year now. That's why I'm looking into enemas. And I recently read about parents who have seen negative side effects from miralax in their child and chop is currently doing a study on the topic... so I'm getting antsy

I've seen a top gi in children's hospital in philly. ( one of the top hospitals in the country ) for costipation and use miralax. Have used enemas but infrequently. It can be used but with guidance from a doctor. Ds has constipation from a newborn stage.

Constipation is tricky to treat especially in young children.

You cannot do things from a book. If your seeing a specialist then you need to follow him and trust them. Especially if your seeing someone in chop. They have the best you can get.

Sourstix that's where I'm waiting to get an appt. but my situation is different ( more of a mystery?) because my daughter doesn't have underlying constipation issues, it's all related to toilet training.

My dr said it is safer/healthier to double and triple the dosage of miralax than starting with other things available. Actually, my dr said that I could take up to seven doses daily without having any danger. So I'd start with doubling the dose and seeing if that helps. DOn't give up on miralax just yet, it is one of the best options out there in terms of long term health: in one end, out the other, no discomfort, no side effects, relatively easy to take. Also, it is important to note that the way miralax works is by drawing water out of the body into the stool in order for it to be easy to pass. If you don't drink enough, no amount of miralax will work. She should be having MORE than 8 cups of water a day. (this is the same for most constipation meds)

your child will eventually see one of their psychologists. they are phenomenal. trust your gut they really know what they are doing. they will figure it out. obviously there is a reason to dc constipation. they dont know. they have done all testing. as they probably will do for you.

you will need to be patient. it takes time to figure it out. but rest assure your in good hands. and no book can give you what chop can. btdt. hatzlacha and refuah sheleima. it was a tough some years dealing with this. but chop held me hand through it all.

btw who is the gi your seeing there?

passionfruit is correct about the miralax. do not stop what your doing. wait till your gi tells you to. also dont change any dosage without speaking with the doctor. this is for professionals to decide.

and yes the miralax draws out water from the colon to help the stool pass easily. and painless. if there is fear of pain. I dont know what your child has. im just speculating. your child must drink alot. they will probably put dc on high fiber diet. fiber does the same. it softens the stool. they will try to tell you to give your child a lot of fluids to keep the stools soft and moving. I used to mix water with raspberry from kedem compnay. bec ds wouldnt just dring plain old water.

meantime when your child has an accident try to be as calm as possible. it will help your child be calm. you can pm me if you want to discuss anything about this.

all I wrote here is only my experience. this can be totally not what your child has.

it doesnt matter what came first the chicken or the egg. if the toileting issues started first or the constipation. if your child indeed has constipation then that will be dealt with. they will try to find what its stemming from. if its fear they will help you.

I hope I was helpful. I know just how hard this can be. this is very much not spoken about and is a tough subject to talk about.

Has anyone here tried prune juice? I used it for DD, mixed with orange juice, and it works every time. DD had terrible constipation from the time she was a baby, up until about age 3. Prune juice was the only thing we ever needed, in addition to lots of water and a high fiber diet.

oh yes if you could get dc to drink prune juice it would be a different story. I just think prune juice isnt the same as miralax. miralax is for severe constipation. when they cant do it the regualr stuff like prune juice.

this type of constipation is not the norm. thats why op is needing more help. there are percentage of children with this problem.

This sounds soooo familiar. I too, have a 5 year old daughter with the same issues. Its been a hard 2 1/2 years.
I've recently been to a Pedicatric GI and he basically diagnosed my daughter with encopresis. We started on a strict regiman of a capful of miralax daily mixed and dissolved for at least minute into 6-8 oz juice - preferably pear juice.
We also have toileting time twice a day, in the morning - after breakfast, and afternoon, before or after dinner. She needs to sit for at least 10 minutes.
The theory behind this is to allow 6-12 months for the colon to shrink, since it's probably stretched out due to the constipating.
It has been working out pretty well with occasional small accidents. However, now that I've seen the GI, I am almost sure that my daughter is not in control of her accidents, therefore there is no negativity associated with accidents.

I strongly recommend you meet with a GI. I can recommend the one I saw if you PM me. YOu need to be under the direction of a doctor who can guide you.

Hatzlacha!

New amother here.

I'm surprised I don't know what enemes means? Can someone enlighten me?

I'm surprised because I'm dealing with exactly this situation with my son since ever and I never heard this word. He's almost 4 years now. He's on mirilax for , I think, almost 2 years!!

He's going to a GI doctor every few months.

I have lots to write on this subject because I'm dealing with it for a long time, but I'm busy now.

anything overused creates a crutch - especially enemas

now why don't you go the natural route & provide a daily dose of yogurt with ground flax seed - the body will use the fibers to be able to have a bowel movement more safe & less painful and/or messy

Toilet time is great advice that someone gave. Every day (once or twice) for 15 mins just sitting on the toilet. It helps for you to sit there with the child.
You can teach your child to do deep breaths, you can bring a book or a toy for him to play while sitting on the toilet.
I've heard excellent results with this.

Wow, I've never heard so much anti-enema before!

Enemas can clear up a backup of constipation. They should not be used on a regular basis, that's not what they are for. But to give a kid a fresh start, they are awesome.

We got Soiling Solutions and he definitely recommends doing a full clean-out before expecting things like miralax to work.

Encopresis is not the same as occasional constipation, so unless you had a kid with actual encopresis you are not talking about the same thing.

We had one kid with encopresis, after doing enemas, suppositories, and miralax he is thank G-d in control. Now we have another - we'll be starting with an enema, and then a suppository if dc needs it on any consecutive day (at least about a half cup of poop).

The muscles are so stretched out, the poor kid doesn't feel the need to relieve himself at all. First you have to empty things out, then make sure it stays empty (miralax, suppositories, and yes enemas if nothing else is working) so the muscle can regain its tone.

Using miralax for months/years is a bad idea too. You're trying to get the kid in control of his body. Why is the "crutch" of enema on a 1-2 time basis worse than the "crutch" of miralax for years?

Cant believe this post! Im not alone? Ive been giving my dd enemas since she was 2. I cant even think of training her till this issue is resolved.
Ofcoarse I hate giving them but I have no choice.
I have spoken to a top psychologist because I was afraid of the trauma and he said so long as its done in a calm environment with no anxiety on my part shell be fine.
She loves barney so I set up the video do the enema and put her straight on the toilet. She watches barney on the toilet for about 20 minutes till we know the mess is over (no mess since its all in the toilet).
Weve been to several GI's, shes on a mix of over the counter stuff and due to anxiety she can hold it all in so when several days pass and shes extremely uncomfortable we resort to the enema.

they are the same crutch & the natural avenue would be fiber consumption as well as plenty of water drinking [perhaps even chamomile tea with honey]

but if a child has an otherwise healthy body ... not one with full fledged encopresis
