What kind of wood is the deck made of? Are you willing to commit to re-staining it on a regular basis?

Not sure what kind of wood they used. Yes I will restain as needed.

I would suggest you go to a good local paint store (not Home Despot or Lowes) and discuss it with someone knowledgable. Different stains penetrate and hold differently depending on the type of wood used (#2 fir vs #2 cedar). The exposure of the deck is also going to determine what kind of stain you use too. Most folks decide on a color stain based on the wood, and the overall esthetic of the home exterior. Be wary since many of these stains contain heavy amounts of copper and some people and pets may react to it. Stains do not improve finishes, so if your deck is old and untreated and giving everyone splinters, a stain will not change that. The only difference it will make is you'll get colored splinters.
