I'm going to be in NY in a couple of weeks and want to take a mini vacation with my kids. I thought a beach vacation would be fun, 2 days, one night within a 2 hour drive of NYC. Any ideas? (it doesn't have to be the beach, but some place where there are activities to do too, as my dh hates the idea of laying around all day.)

there are tons of things to do with the kids in NYC.

Zoo- There are zoos in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Central Park and Queens.

There are childrens museums in Staten Island, Brooklyn and Manhattan. They are all geared to infants till about 10 years old.

Like greenfire said there is the aquarium which is right in coney island which has a nice boardwalk to walk on and a cute little park with rides.

The Jewish Children's Museum is nice. I think it's ten bucks per person. A few hours' worth of entertainment, arts and crafts, video, and lots lots more.

Bear Mtn is part of a state park which is free b/c it's supported by our tax dollars. all of those other options are NOT free.

bear mountains is open nature ... there is a limited amount of fun with small kids ... to them they have a tree at home too ...

as with everything there is a balance of spending vs not spending ... like how about careful spending ...
