When I used to work, I had to give my social security number of course and that was it. My dd started working in a camp and they told her she has to give a copy of the social security card, not just the number. There reasoning is to make sure they number is legit. I understand this, but is this the normal practice nowadays or they're being overlycautious? She of course gave it to them no problem. It's a job in a day camp.

Many workplaces make a copy of your ID card for their records as standard practice. But usually it's photo ID like license or passport.

Everywhere I have worked has asked to make a copy of my social security card. I think it's just standard practice to make sure you can legally work here.

I've always been asked to bring it. It's a normal request especially if you're filling out an I-9 they use that and your drivers license for proof.
