In the past my kids' camp would pool the camp tips together and divide them, this year they sent out a list and want us to give them directly to the counselors. I added up the tips for ONE kid's bunk and it came out to close to $100! I know when I was a counselor I appreciated tips, and I don't want to chas v'shalom short change the counselors--I know its not an easy job, but $100 in tips PER KID seems a bit much. Each counselor has their own amount suggested based on age and responsibility, do I give less per counselor? I don't want to look "cheap" but I want to be able to afford it. What do I do?

Is it a day camp or overnight camp? And is that amount per half or for the full summer?

day camp, for whole summer. I understand that these are the "going rates"--but honestly not in my budget right now. Just how do I tactfully handle these tips without looking "cheap" or not greatful?

Give what you can folded into a heartfelt written card showing your gratitude. They'd appreciate that.

I think that's excessive.

I would do that except that I really know maybe -1/2 counselors for each. I really don't know all the JCs etc.

I'd probably just give a slightly lower tip all around - by taking a few dollars off each one you don't look that cheap but it will add up to a more manageable amount for you, hopefully. Since you said it's a full summer, it doesn't look that bad - like if you shave $5 off a $25 tip you're still giving a mighty decent tip that the counselors won't feel shortchanged.

It can be something simple but genuine. Even if you don't know the counselor.

Dear Rochel,

Thank you so much for taking such great care of our sweet little Rivka and for giving her such a wonderful summer!

Rivka enjoyed every minute and we are very grateful.

With thanks,
