(And...

The Harry Potter Series - JK Rowling Twisted Evil )

Applause

This!!

I read Harry Potter books obsessively during a particularly dark period of my childhood, and they enabled me to survive.

JK Rowling created an entire universe, and I escape into it when things are rough- I've got some of my favorite chapters of the series downloaded in audiobook format on my ipod, and I've read the series tens of times.

PSA: The Harry Potter audiobooks are available for free and safe download on the following link-

https://archive.org/details/Tropangnj8815hp03

The above link is for HP and the Prisoner of Azkaban, but if you go to the bottom of the page, the other HP books are there, too.

To download, simply go to "Download Options", click on the down arrow by the top option which will have a reasonably large number of files listed next to it, and click on the chapter that you want to download. The chapters are in OGG format, so if you want to download them onto an ipod, you'd have to find a free website that converts files to MP3 format- I used this one-

http://audio.online-convert.co.....o-mp3

and had no issues with it.

Sorry that this post is so long and goes off topic a little. I just felt like sharing this knowledge, cuz I was so excited when I found the audiobooks online for free. Smile

I just remembered.
When I was young I LOVED The Baby Sitters club series.
Does anyone else remember those?
I must have had at least 20 books memorized.
I did not have many friends and those books were so amazing for me.

Interesting that so many people were most inspired by self-help type books. All of my most life changing books are fiction.

A Wind in the Door and A Swiftly Tilting Planet by Madaline L'Angel
Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austin
Exodus by Leon Uris
The Shadow of the Moon by M. M. Kaye
Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
The Doomsday Book by Connie Willis

Something about each of these books makes me think about life and history and relationships differently.

I loved the Madeline L'Engle books. And their lessons. To stay on the fiction list - little house on the prairie. Same reason you quoted.

The Little Prince is a dear book of mine.
And on a different note, Cancer is Not a Disease changed my ideas and fears about the dreaded word.

I don't remember the title of the book. It could have been "Nothing but the Truth." It was a semi-fictional account ("based on a true story") of a girl who became a BT and was engaged and then found out her mother had been previously married without a proper get. The way she stayed so strong and used her experiences to be there for others going through similar things inspired me to do the same.

ETA: Just to clarify, I did not go through that experience myself - referring to difference circumstances!

what happened to the girl? did she get married? have children?

I wish they changed my life, but had a huge impact on me.
Incredible
Out of the depths by R Lau

A book I found honest and enlightening was "a mother's reckoning " by sue klebold.

Oh, and confessions of a domestic failure should be read by every husband to get a glimpse into the life of a mother!

If I'm thinking about the same book she did not get married. But as a lawyer dealing in matrimonial law she tried to convince secular couples to also have a kosher get so no one else should face her situation.

"The Whole Story: A Journey Into the 20th Century"

My great uncle wrote it. It gave me insight into some of my family's history and experience during the holocaust, life behind the iron curtain, and tidbits inbetween. Even handwritten letters. The book gave me the curiosity and fuel I needed to contact family members I've never even met. Some I have gotten close to as well!
