Can anyone recommend some good reading material for Yom Kippur that will keep me engaged and help pass the time, but that is also somewhat within the spirit of the day. I enjoy reading novels but I don't mind non fiction if written well (think The Glass Castle). Any and all recommendations appreciated!

At the risk of sounding a bit preachy-

Please don't just "pass the time" on YK. It is such a special day. The day itself allows forgiveness of the Jewish people! Read the machzor. The commentaries on the machzor. Go on to websites like YU, Aish, Chabd.org (there are many others) and download and print some shiurim to read.

I'm assuming from your post you find fasting difficult, I do too. But I find the more you go INTO the day, really truly connecting with it, the easier the fast becomes.

I haven't fasted in three years, don't even know if I'll make it thru this one so trying to plan ahead. Your suggestions don't help pass the time for me at all.

Guess you didn't mean any and all then.

Never mind.

I liked " free spirit" by Joshua safran ( similar to glass castle), " in the darkroom" by Susan faludi, " the immortal life of Henrietta lacks", "if all the seas were ink" and books by Dara horn

I actually think most of those books touch on themes of repentance and forgiveness

Can't for the life of me see the purpose of this passive aggressive post.

I felt hurt by your response to me after I had taken the trouble to respond to you late at night. There was no other purpose but it was not passive aggressive.

Another Beige, the main thing Yom Kippur is to fast, so anything to help pass the time is ok. I'm actually also looking for ideas to pass the time & take my mind off the fast.

I'm with amother beige. It's ok to read whatever you want, but she WAS offering suggestions. As in all suggestions, you can take it or leave it.

I'm planning on reading:

The blessings of a broken heart

To dwell in the palace

the Big Book

Not all repentance related (though the Big Book is all about my relationship with god) but I also need something to just make the time pass. I find very few 'jewish' books engaging, but these the first two on my list are exceptions.
