currently have a shop light and I hate it because it hangs over the table and attracts tons of bugs which fall down onto the table or buzz around our heads. Can't seem to find a suitable alternative. Any advice?

We use a CbyGE bulb so we can dim it / change the tone of it and it has a built in timer. If you are having a big problem I recommend a relatively dim light where you sit and a super bright decoy light nearby but outside the succah.

We have a smaller shop light that hangs in the corner, not over the table. If there are bugs (I haven't noticed), they are not near our heads or our food.

We use a few ropes of x-mas lights DH bought after the season. Not super bright, but they make for a pleasant atmosphere.

We use many strings of colorful and white xmas lights. Soooo pretty!
