They said sitting is best. He can stand as a pre-teen etc. Not that I know what they do past a certain age lol. Apart from that it's not so different.

Yep, on a stool. Positive reinforcement for a good splash! (Helps with the aim) He only does it sitting if he's doing #2 as well.
Why would you want to teach a boy in a way that's so unnatural for him? There is nothing to reteach here.
