Rarely gets that cold in Toronto... (and hasn't in recent years). and I don't think CG is popular in Europe... and if there were Imamothers in very cold states, the would talk F not C.

Very impressive deduction skills!

Get a down coat. And the lining should be a thick fleece or sherpa fleece.
Coats come with temperature ratings. Look for a rating of at least -40

Thanks! That's a lot longer than I feel comfortable wearing. The extra length makes for extra weight. I prefer one that hits no lower than the knee.

Warmth isn't just about your coat. Its about your accessories.
You can wear a sweater under your coat. But you should also have warm boots, gloves, hat, scarf and leggings.
All together you will be toasty warm even if you don't buy the wRmest option coat. The first coat is good enough if you wear accessories.

I have a land's end coat and it's too heavy for me :-(
I'm looking for a lighter coat that is still very warm.

You have to sacrifice something. You can't get the warmth you're looking for in a light thin coat. Check out what they wear in Antarctica. Astronaut-esque.

Do some research online about outdoor gear that is rated by temperature. Companies like Marmot, NorthFace etc give temperature ratings on their garments. Don't expect high fashion.

You also need to be aware of what kind of cold it is. Is it wet wind driven snow or calm winds and sunny with temps -3C? The outer shell is just about as important as the inner. Remember down takes longer to dry out and loses it's loft.

My preference is component systems, that means that the jacket can be used in milder weather by reducing the inner liner.

Is your coat down?
You can't get lighter than down. You should get down with an outer material that is thin like nylon. Wear a fleece sweatshirt underneath and you'll be good.

Is a Canada Goose parka truly warmer than a Lands' end down parka? Has anyone had personal experience with both?
