At this stage public school is probably overkill. The district needs to evaluate even if the child is not in PS, or you can do a private evaluation. If the issues persist despite normal interventions then you may need to step up your attempts, but at this stage I think discussing PS is premature. We're talking about a 5-year-old who's behind on alphabet, for unknown reasons not working independently, but is socially and otherwise developmentally fine. The reading and classwork are definitely something to be concerned about but there's no reason to assume before even trying them that regular interventions won't help.

If the larger day school has resources for kids who need extra help, though, I would strongly consider looking into that, including the possibility of mid-year switch since it sounds like his current school does not feel equipped to help (if they're talking about repeating the grade in November, then they don't have proper interventions in place.) If you can get him into a school with on-site resource room and reading specialists, do it ASAP.

I strongly agree with this.
First, find out if there is room to switch him mid year. Then, make an appointment and see for yourself if they can give your child the extra push /help he needs.
I just feel if they are talking retention in December, less than 6 months of the school year, they’be given up. And,I’m afraid that the attitude of the teacher will be not to worry about him not getting it, since he’ll repeat and get it next year. He will literally waste the year.
I use to work in kindergarten and have heard this before. They just won’t put the effort to help your child.

If you decide to switch or not, please get him evaluated.
The only problem is, if you go the route of public school evaluation, it might take more than 6 months to get an appointment. Meanwhile your child may not get any educational support where he’s at.

Sorry I feel very strongly about this, because I’ve heard this not only from teachers, but from directors themselves, not to put in too much effort.

I don't know the exact details out of NY, but legally the public dept of ed has a time limit on how long they can take to evaluate. Private places often have longer waiting lists than that. But either route should be OK. And you don't need to wait for the evaluation to start with the pre-reading work.

And while it's a good idea to ask if there's room to switch mid-year, don't worry too much about the answer. Even if they say no, if you need it badly enough things could change.

I agree with the idea of doing a full evaluation. I think the public school system is obligated to give you a full evaluation, even if you are a private student, and that can really be very helpful. An evaluation can pinpoint areas of weakness that, when worked on with appropriate therapists, can really help your child do better in school in the long run.

Shemesh may be helpful in helping you figure out how to get your son help (in or out of the classroom). You can reach them at 410-843-7524 or see https://www.shemeshbaltimore.org/

To clarify he is not just having alphabet recognition issues. He has been struggling with a speech issue since he was a baby. While he is now doing better he still has underdeveloped speech patterns (doesn't tell detailed stories etc). This is a skill I see in his peers. To further clarify there is a reading resource room and assistance in the school but I guess I have not been on top of it more. In fact I guess communication has been pretty bad, I can blame myself for this as well. I will be speaking with them about increasing services in the classroom. Is it overkill to have someone in the class everyday? I don't think they are available that often so I understand it would need to be private pay at that point.

Sounds like the kind of issues that could be addressed more effectively by pulling out of the class rather than having someone in the class more. Having someone in the class every day is what you'd do for kids with social and behavioral issues. It would be appropriate for him to have speech therapy more than once a week, and to have pull-out intervention daily. Not sure what you have access to but over here that's what I'd advocate for.

You have to become your child's advocate.
Make sure he gets proper services, and the right amount.
As I said above speech and reading in the early years go hand in hand
Think about it, it's all sounds, if it's a phonics based program.
I'm assuming it is, because if it were a whole language program teacher would not think to hold back, and you mentioned letter sound recognition.

There are many games you can play with him at home. You can make these yourself, no need to buy.
PM me if you are interested.

Didnt read all responses. Been preschool morah for years. Very rarely do we repeat for accademics only. I strongly advise against. Most important is a childs social emotional well being. Accademic delays wont be solved by repeating him. He needs to be evaluated and a goal needs to be set ie reading or letter recognition. You need the proper resources to achieve those goals. If the school cant work with him find one that will as this will very well be a long term issue. Behatzlocha!
