Mishpacha has a pepper steak recipe that calls for it. The local supermarkets don’t know what it is. Anyone have a clue? I’m assuming it’s either a spice or sauce of some kind.

Mirin is an Asian sweet rice wine often used in cooking. (Sake is another Asian wine used in cooking.)

You can substitute mirin with rice vinegar, but make sure to either get seasoned one or add a little bit of sugar to it.

Jewish Foodie, you need to learn some more before you answer. Mirin is a gluten free, sweet, low alcohol japanese wine used for cooking. People sub sweet rice vinegar, but it is not at all the same.

Thank you Andrea. Though three different companies we bought turned out to be gluten. So I suggest anyone with celiac be careful. Some are definitely gluten.

Yup, looked it up. You are correct. Thanks, Andrea! I love learning new things.

Since I started making sushi, it's been a struggle to find gluten free Mirin, so I assumed I had the answer she needed. My bad. Happy Purim!

You can buy it in a whole foods type of supermarket, some health food stores have it. Places that sell cultural food since I think it is Japanese condiment (rice wine it's sweet)

Cooking sherry is a closer substitute than sweetened rice vinegar, imo. Vinegar and wine have very different tastes and smells, even though one derives from the other.
