A quality worker is worth a bit more. It depends on the number of children, the hours, and if they need to schlep on the transportation van or not. It also depends if you will accept children who aren’t toilet trained yet, etc.

So basically, with or without toilet trained (let's say yes), not including being on transportation, lots of kids, and quality teacher, from 9:00-2:30 every day?

yes, way too much. If you are working for an organization, in most places, you will get paid from 6-7 per hour up to 9-10 per hour.

a friend asked me to assist with her playgroup/ babysitting service for a few hours a week. How much should I ask for? I assume I'll be paid by the hour.

The going rate here is $8-8.50 per hr. for an assistant

I received $12/hr to assist in a day care, but maybe thats not the norm.
