Can anyone recommend a stuttering specialist in Brooklyn? Extra points if they take insurance.
Thanks so much

I wonder if there's any stuttering specialist that actually fully cured stuttering. My dh stutters. He went to numerous therapists when he was growing up. Nothing worked for him. My son also stutters and the only therapy that has helped him somewhat was actually voice lessons - it taught him how to breathe when speaking better than any speech therapy.
So to anyone responding to OP's request, can you please also indicate if you have any good experience to report with whichever stuttering specialist you recommend?

HI I don't live in NY so I don't have suggestions for OP, but I want to comment on this quote. I stutter myself. Yes, I still do, but not too often. I was not cured either. Therapists don't usually cure things, but they can help and teach skills. This is a general therapy statement (I am a type of therapist myself).
My second point is that it is very individual. Some people improve a lot and some don't. You don't know what will be until you get there. Also, if you don't try, you will always wonder what could have been. Again, I am speaking a stutterer who still stutters.
Third, if the child is still young, it can be a stage and a good stuttering therapist can guide you as to how to react and what to do to help your child the most. I took my DS and BH bah he is doing great. If this is for a young child, there is a good chance that it is very worth it to try therapy!
OP, I don't know who you are asking for. If it is a young child, do you best to take away the pressure from speaking. Spend individual time with this child (I have a full house so I know this can be very hard!!) and just play and talk (don't read books) in a chilled calm no-pressure atmosphere - even 5 min a day. The earlier in the day you do this special time, the better, because it sets the tone for the whole day. Also, work on turn taking in general to help turn taking while speaking. If the child is rushed because they feel it is hard to find time to talk because they will get interrupted, etc, the pressure is on. Make talking a pressure free experience.
Look on the national stuttering association website for handouts. You can get handouts for teachers too if you child spend time in school.
Like I said, I don't know anyone in NY.

thanks for responding. I think the attention would help a lot. said child is 6. stuttering has been on and off for a while and I have ignored it but now I think it needs to be addressed.

I hope you find a therapist to help you. Is there a children's hospital near you that has outpatient speech therapy services? They might have someone who specializes in stuttering.

I am a speech therapist-not in Brooklyn anymore. I have been impressed with the results of Phil and his son, Uri Schneider. They have an office in Brooklyn and specialize in stuttering. They should have a website.

Responding to the person who asked about therapists for her husband
1) An adult who stutters will not be cured, if it is true stuttering. Can be managed better and attitudes can change which can have a positive effect
2) Many people who stutter are very sensitive about it. It can be hurtful if you ask your husband to see a therapist, unless he asked your advice or help. Picture the other way, if he asked you to lose weight etc. so you can be careful.
Hatzlacha!!

“Cured” is not a word typically associated with stuttering therapy. Beware of anyone who claims to “cure” stuttering. The goal of stuttering therapy is to help the client speak more fluently or to stutter more fluently in more severe cases.
Breathing/pacing speech rate is often a component in therapy.
I’m a speech therapist in Brooklyn but don’t know of anyone to refer you to. I think Yeled VYalda has a stuttering clinic though, probably accept insurance. I would look into that.

Check out Phil Schneider/ Schneider speech.
Him and his son are experts in stuttering and have released documentaries on the subject. I think they have an office in Queens

Sometimes stuttering is associated with strep infections or other infections. I noticed that my son's stutter always got worse when he was sick, especially when he had strep. His stutter completely disappeared when we treated long term for strep, and never came back. I heard from a few parents who said they had a similar story. https://www.stutter.ca/find-he......html

I would do lots of my own research, most doctors are not so well versed in pandas, and it's not an easy thing to test for or diagnose.

I stuttered terribly as a teen and bH do not anymore, without any speech therapy. It was 100% anxiety and low self-esteem (though no one around me would have thought I had low self-esteem).

Randy Dorfman has offices in Boro Park and Monsey. My son stuttered - she didn't even see him, but gave me an my husband guidelines of how to interact with him. His stuttering cleared up in a few months. She says true stuttering only happens after the age of 7 - before then it can be eliminated by retraining speech patterns (which is what her rules do).
She was always readily available when I had a question. Highly recommend her.
PM me if you want her contact info

Not sure if you ever found a specialist but I am a speech therapist who specializes in stuttering. Feel free to contact me at rivkysusskind@gmail.com. I employ a holistic approach to stuttering therapy, and I'm also a person who stutters so I have a real sense of the disorder. Hope you find the help you need!

Yes my son also stuttered from strep. Gluten can also contribute to gut inflammation and stuttering in kids.
