I'm losing my mind.

My very adorable, smart, sweet, very spacy nine-year-old keeps misplacing his glasses. Usually, he finds them after a frantic search in the morning before the bus comes, but this morning he had to leave without them. We searched his room, and just couldn't find them. It's not on the kitchen hutch or on the steps leading upstairs, other places the glasses sometimes rest for the night.

I raised my voice in frustration this morning, and I feel bad about it. But how can I help him learn to take responsibility for his glasses?

Ideas? Suggestions? Support?

Get him a holder do he has a place to put his glasses. It should be near his bed. He has to get used to taking off his glasses when he puts on PJs.

I saw something like this in the x-mas Tree Shop for $5

I have 3 kids in glasses. One started as a toddler. The only person ever looked for their glasses was DH, he falls asleep on a couch or kids bed and then moves to his bed, leaving his glasses behind.

If it's happening mostly overnight he should designate a special spot for then and always keep them there. Whenver he puts then down he should say out loud " I'm putting my glasses (name the place)" because he's forgetting to rember when he takes them off, later it's too late. Alternatively, maybe there is a kind of tile or chip he can attatch to then and page then from his phone?

My mom got my brother lenses at that age because of this, and also because he was always breaking them.

Did he remember to take them out every night? I have caught my teen DC sleeping in lenses to many nights. We already went to an eye specialist for problems directly related to wearing lenses for to many hours.

My 9 year old breaks his like they’re disposable. I went to this one store that you can buy two pairs for $79 and for an additional $15 they will replace them an unlimited number of times during the year. The only issue is that you need to bring the broken glasses with you. They don’t replace if they’re lost. I have 4 kids in glasses and 3 of them break their glasses regularly. It makes me nuts.

I did this as a teen. I started growing blood vessels in my eyes, and wearing contacts was difficult for a long time. I’m in my late 30s and I can no longer wear them at all. Wish someone would have saved me from myself. I gave my daughter the gift of this knowledge when I bought her lenses. So far she takes them out nightly.

Hey, this was me! Because of the ADD, discovered a few years later. I went to school without them many times. My parents tried everything they could think of, to no avail. As frustrated as my Mother felt, I always felt a LOT worse. So... as hard as it is, please try to give your kid a break. He can't help it. Don't turn it I to a value judgement: "You're irresponsible!" This will inly make him feel worse and cause a lifetime of issues with his self image.

He will sort it out on his own in time.

What about putting them on some kind of glass leash and then getting one of the tracker devices to put on the loop. I know they sell that kind of thing for keys. Obviously you can't put them on the glasses but if you had a leash (the kind of thing people wear and then the glasses hang on their chest), you could attach the tracker to that.

Thanks for the help guys!

It was such a hectic day yesterday, I didn't get a chance to post the end of the story... We did end up finding the glasses (wedged between his desk and the wall). We asked my little guy to think about how to prevent this from happening in future, and he came up with the solution most of you just gave me. We now have a designated glasses spot on his desk. If the glasses are not on his nose, they need to be in that spot. If we find them around the house, we can charge him a chore.
