I'm sure that this is not uncommon, but I'm asking around so going to go anon.

My kids are longtime Shanik patients and I am totally fed up with their office. I can't get an appointment for love or money, unless it's with a doctor I don't like. My kids don't get sick very frequently b"H but it's so frustrating!

Now here's why I don't want to leave: I have my doctors/PAs that I love (and I know which ones to avoid). My kids are so comfortable with their primary doc that we see for well visits. And I know that they will always come through in an emergency or in a complicated situation and they're really well-connected with all of the specialists and hospitals.

Some of the other practices that I've considered are not nearly as accommodating and are more likely to send you to the ER than to squeeze you in for an appointment, especially late in the day.

Who do you take your kids to? Are you happy there? What are the pros and cons? Did you switch from Shanik?

TIA!

That’s why I switched to Chemed. Nowadays they take X-rays on site and they have an on-site lab. For quick visits- like just need a culture, Chemed had fast track where you don’t need an appointment.

No doubt dr Shanik is the best pediatrician in the world... but we don’t really get to see him anymore and I don’t like some pa’s there.

If ch”vs someone in the family gets very sick, then yes you would want dr shanik involved so it’s tricky to switch but I did and it’s working out ...

I take my kids to Dr. Shanik's office (we happen to like Dr. Lapidus alot, and also some of the PA's) for well visits and for sick appt's if I can get a convenient appt. If not, I just take my kids to the urgent care facility at GG plaza.

I respect Dr. Shanik tremendously, but I personally need a pediatrician who is a bit more open-minded and forward-thinking, who won't give me a hard time about referrals for specialists or therapy.

See, but isn't that crazy? I like Dr. Lapidus too, and Dr. Braverman, Dr. Golub, and PA Weiner. We used to go see her (Weiner) at home when we couldn't get an appointment but now she can't see Shanik patients anymore. It's just nuts to have to run around town to get an appointment with random PAs that we don't even know...

I recognize the importance of having their office advocate for me when necessary, and they're incredible in an emergency (I've even called Dr. Shanik on Shabbos), but this waiting on hold for twenty minutes (or more!) to learn that there are no appointments left (by 9 in the morning) is really getting to me.

I actually wasn't a big fan of Dr. Fenster when he was at Dr. Shanik's office, so I'm not considering that practice, but thank you.

Funny, I didn't personally hit it off with him either. But I do think he's a good doctor, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone that does feel comfortable with him.

That's what some of the other doctors in his practice are for - balances things out.

But they all have to follow Dr. Shanik's policies. Don't they?

I find there's wiggle room for their own opinions. Like when DD needed OT, I went to see PA Wiener.....

Use the other offices, Howell is quiet and empty, I only go to Madison for well visits or if I really want to see a specific doctor.

I go to the River Avenue office for well visits and whenever possible, they book up quickly these days too. And when I’m desperate I’ll go to Brick but I don’t usually like the doctors there...

Thanks Chayalle for the empathy Wink and thank Lemon for the Chemed recommendation... don’t they have a high doctor turnover rate though? I know a lot of people left when Dr. Eilenberg did, same for Dr. Shoner.

I use chemed. I've been really happy with Dr. Hirsh and Dr. Koweblum and PA Dumbroff. I used to use Eilenberg when he worked for them and me and my kids loved him, but I couldn't take the wait times and when he left I didn't follow him.

Thanks DVOM.

Does anyone else use any of the other practices? Eilenberg? Sasson? Anyone else I haven't heard of? I considered Indich and Gittleman when my oldest was born and decided against them (and I think Gittleman has been closed to new patients for like 15 years anyway).

I thought of a great idea! Stick with dr shanik since he really is the best but you can use any urgent care/ fast track for all the small things - no appointments needed/ just walk in - they are all over Lakewood- one in west gate, shoprite plaza, Chemed/ you don’t have to change your pcp ! And if you feel they weren’t good then make an appointment the next day with shanik

Dr. Rebecca Perril in Tinton falls. She is right off exit 100a, by the outlets. She is a bit further than shaniks office but short wait if any. It is her and one NP who is very good as well. She really knows your kids and also treats her patients in the hospital in Monmouth and jersey shore. There are a few families from lakewood who use her, although most of her cliental is from the tinton falls area. There are also other doctors who bring their kids to her.
