There's always room to do things smarter, right?

What strategies do you use to stay on top of your inbox?

I have "UnrollMe" filtering out my subscription emails, also once in a while try to really unsubscribe to the ones I really don't want, and I have gmail sorting my real emails from my imamother etc alerts into its different tabs. Which is a cool idea.

But I'm talking now about the real emails, not filtering out junk mail. I do a LOT of email correspondence and I strongly suspect there is a way I can use less brainpower on keeping track of it all.

I have the same issue. No real words of wisdom. I wish gmail had a better system. The stars, tabs, etc. don't appeal to me.

Periodic decluttering aka deleting old messages from both inbox and sent box. Nothing automatic, which means looking at each one and deciding. Huge waste of time but has to be done if one lacks the intestinal fortitude to delete messages as soon as read or sent. But it piles up so fast! I spent a week or two deleting several years' worth of emails, which numbered in the thousands. Whittled them down to under 50 by deleting or moving to other folders. Lo and behold, they're piling up again. Aaaaccckkkk!

Don't let it build up.

Unsubscribe from ads, mailing lists, etc.

Use the "daily digest" feature for email groups.

As soon as you process an email (reading, responding, etc) either file it or delete. I file almost everything, and delete junk.

I use the same system for work and personal email. Occasionally I need to clean up my inbox, but it's not a regular thing. The files keep all the info and the "paper trail" easily accessible.

Can you explain what you mean by filing?
I haven't found gmail's system appealing....maybe I am missing something

Move it to a folder. You create and name the folders according to your needs.
