many years ago, a poor shepherd boy...
ds learnt the song in school, but doesnt know all the words and they only put the first line of the song on the newsletter. they probably assumed everyone knows the words, but apparently not. also, is the tune the same as the old yiddish song "oifen pripechik"?

Dont know this song...but found the words online
is this what your looking for?

Many years ago
A poor shepherd boy
Watched the sheep all day
Akiva didn’t even know the Aleph Beis
Which all of us can say (repeat)

Rochel his smart wife
Gave him good advice
And this is what she said
It’s never too late to start learning Torah
If you use your head (repeat)

So Rabbi Akiva went to Yeshiva
A Tzaddik he became
He had so many Talmidim who all learned Torah
And we can do the same

I learned the last paragraph as:

Rabbi Akiva learned Torah day and night
A great Talmud Chochom he became
He had so many talmidim learning Torah
We should do the same

Bringing up this old post to see if we can reconstruct another Rabbi Akiva song:

A fox was walking on the riverbank...

If we leave the water we'll die.

Mommy, Tatty, you will see,
Someday I will be
A talmid chochom like Rabbi Akiva
And you'll be proud of me.

Hillel... climbed on the rooftop...

If I remember correctly these songs are from the mitzva tree tapes by Morah Blanka Rosenfeld.

I think you're right. Maybe it's somewhere in my basement waiting for me to buy a little machine to convert records to digital format.

Wow this is so random I've been trying to remember the words to this song too! Here's what I can remember.

A fox once walked on a riverbank
He saw the fish swimming to and fro
The fish said we're afraid of the net
The fisherman will kill us you know

I'll protect you if you come upon the land
The fox began to lie
We can't do that the fish exclaimed
If we leave the water we will die

...

Rabbi Akiva was not afraid
He said come learn with me
[something about learning Torah]
They forgot the terrible decree

It was a difficult time for the Jews
Under the Roman rule
The Romans forbade the study of Torah
The decree was harsh and cruel... Music

The people gathered all around
And forgot the Roman decree

Oh Mommy, Daddy, you will see
Someday I’ll grow up to be
A talmid chacham like rabbi Akiva
You’ll be proud of me

Hillel hatzadik climbed on a roof
To hear the words of Torah below
His heart was burning
With Torah learning
He didn’t even notice the snow

Oh mommy daddy...
A Talmid chacham like Hillel hatzadik..

(I think this is the uncle moishy version.. there are a few)
