I need advice for how to make delicious chulent. Looking to try something new. I have read some previous posts but my head is spinning. I don't know which spices would combine well! Would love to hear your tried and true ingredients/methods. Thank you in advance

Want my recipe?
1 cup great northern beans
1/4 cup barley
Tbsp or more salt
Some black pepper
Garlic powder
Plenty paprika
2 pieces flanken
Some marrow bones,
All dumped into crockpot on high for 2,3 hours and then on low-med till we eat shabbos lunch.
I’ve already tried browning meat w onions and all the ketchup n sauces n spices n soup mixes. I promise this is soooo heartwarming and filling.
We keep things simple and super hearty

Thanks for the recipe! I can't imagine...no ketchup or tomato sauce or anything? I guess you weren't impressed with all the sauces you mentioned!

Flanken
Marrow bones( sometimes)
Little honey
Little ketchup
Little mustard
One bag great northern beans
1/4 c barley
Salt
Black pepper
Garlic powder
Paprika
Water to fill
I put on high then switch to low before shabbos

I also like similar concept. No sauces or ketchup simple is best !
A few other things I find work great.
Not too much water! usually about 4 cups of water to 1 cup barley and 2 cups of water to 1 cup beans( if beans were presoaked which I always do.) No additional water necessary no matter how much meat or potatoes you put in.
I find too much water waters down the chulents richness.
I like using flanken that has plenty of fat on it.
Add a bit of cayenne pepper too but not too much.

I tried a combination of the above posts -- like with paprika, onion soup mix...I think I put too much water though.
1) Can someone help me make a chulent that is delicious with proportional amounts? I guess I am not very intuitive!
2) Anyone else want to share their recipe? Please only share if your recipe is good

Buy “cholent spice,” in kosher supermarket and use a good amount. It’s delicious and u won’t need other spices.

How does this work without any liquid? How does the barley and beans cook? And no potatos/onions?

Very similar to mine!
I agree, very simple and VERY hearty!
And also lighter to digest than those with sauces, onions, etc.
I put water to cover.
And one potato cubed.

Sauté onion. Add great northern beans and chulent mix as much as needed. One clove of garlic. Your favorite meat. Salt and pepper. Simple and delicious.

Definitely not dry, but thick is okay if it's moist and flavorful
