I wear a mix of real and fake jewelry.

I hate being asked about it, yet so many of my relatives, both very wealthy and not wealthy at all, somehow feel comfortable asking me if a piece is real.

I find it so gauche and tacky; I would never ask someone if her jewelry was real. It makes me really uncomfortable. I always answer honestly, but I really wish I was never asked that question.

How do you handle it?

I don't plan on selling it - so I didn't record the purchase price. Followed by a "shrug".

"If you'll forgive me for not answering, I'll forgive you for asking."
"Who wants to know?"
"I give out that info only on a need-to-know basis."
"What do you think?"
"I'm not at liberty to say."
"I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you."
"It's as genuine as you are."
"I'm sorry, what?" "Come again?" "Sorry?" "Run that past me once more?" "I didn't quite catch that."

Why do you ask?

Are you in the market for a similar piece? (I'm more forgiving if they are.)

I get this often.
I say, "No, it's imaginary."
The asker usually walks away, completely confused.

OP here.... So the problem is that these are mostly close family members - SILs, MIL, aunts and uncles. I know they were tacky by asking but I can't be rude by answering... can I?

Maybe they think its a conversation that you want to have. Some people really like to talk about their stuff.

Well then you do have the option of answering yes or no and changing the subject.

Usually, it is not something that is in their price range. They try to guess the amount when I don't answer.

They refer to their own jewelry as my two thousand dollar pearls.

I was not brought up this way.

I would say, "it was a gift from my husband" and smile. They shouldn't expect you to know details about a gift.

It is indeed an un-classy question, but you don't want to match bad taste with bad taste. So I'd smile and say, "It's a real necklace" or "No it's imaginary" with a wink (like someone wrote) but don't be sarcastic or rude. That's my take.

A SIL did that to me. I had won Jewelry from an auction many years ago. (which she did not know) we don't have alot a money to afford real, (which she knew). So my SIL comes up to me and says "nice earrings, are they real?" She asked in way like, she knew I couldn't afford something like that on me own. I was taken aback and did not want to answer her. It was not her business to know if they are real or not! In hindsight, wish I told her "Does it matter?"
Oh well, anyway it is rude, and at least now I know that I would never ask someone that question. It isn't my business and what would it help to know.
