I just came back from a meeting with my dd's school ( going into 5th grade) and they told us that she will need a shadow/para for the upcoming year in order to stay in the school.
She had social, emotional challenged this past year that heavily impacted her learning ( she is not a very strong student to begin with) She is getting therapy, is on medication etc.,

Can anyone who has needed to find a shadow/para for their child tell me the following:

1. What wording did you use when you advertised ( assuming that you sis, getting one through the BOE is not an option for us)

2. What is the range of the going rate ( when I searched Imamother, the posts were from 2013, and therefore outdated)

3. Anything helpful you can pass along from positive/negative experiences.

Thank you!

You might do a lot better to go through the proper agency. I have seen many instances where a shadow/para was clueless as to how to properly help and support.

And that way, maybe insurance can help with the cost.

For this kind of situation, a BCBA can be invaluable.

does the school have any experience with children having a shadow or it just makes sense to them? If they have experience they might have someone to recommend. If they don't have experience, I would suggest proceeding with caution. Like what will the role of the shadow vs. the teacher be in relation with the child, you want that to be clear from the get go.

My friend tried that route and in the end decided to pull the child out and put him in a head start program (this was for preschool). She was much happier. She was able to switch him to a "mainstream" school with leaving him back a year the following year. I realize 5th grade is very different.

I am going through something similar. A shadow is going to cost us somewhere in the $15-20 an hour range. If you want someone with credentials, it's way above that. My child's issues are social-emotional as well. We're hoping to get away with only a few hours a day. Board of ed won't cover it as the issues are not academic. We are contesting it, but I am not too hopeful. Best of luck!

Yes, it is very pricey. For us, it is the only way they will allow her to come back in September...I am just crowdsourcing for someone, how are you going about finding someone?
Hope it all works out

If she needs for social skills you can go through an agency. Many insurances cover this. Where do you live?

I'm looking for a para and the agency preferred doesn't have anyone for me. It's for behavioral in high school, not health. Does anyone know of another agency that may have para's willing to work in Crown Heights?
