It makes him a jerk if his wife is overwhelmed, or if she is taking over some traditional male responsibilities (like earning money).

Interestingly enough, where I live, it is considered the dh's job to grocery shop!!
I work with a lot of dati leumi men in Israel and they all do the major grocery shopping. It's funny, during breaks they will often argue where the best deals are to be had, or where the best produce is to be found.
My dh as well did all the major food shopping (I supplemented) until recently.
