Any ideas for a show that is clean enough for a 12 year old boy to watch? He’s very mature and not at all sheltered, but so far the ones we’ve tried have not been so appropriate. The problem is he won’t enjoy shows that are geared toward kids. Are there any adult shows that we’d both enjoy that aren’t too inappropriate? Or am I dreaming...

Avatar: The Last Airbender is incredible - it’s animated and played on Nickelodeon back in the day, but I saw it for the first time as an adult and it blew me away with the excellent writing, character arcs and themes. Really, really good.

The West Wing was great.

Depending on how unsheltered he and you are - Babylon 5. It's not a completely clean show, but I don't remember anything beyond kissing and some heavy topics coming up (ex: I think the doctor dates a dancer with a terminal illness for one episode - but the storyline served as a context for a discussion of what is a good life. It ended pretty quickly.)

Haven't watched it but I've heard great things. Steven Universe is a cartoon that I guess is technically for kids, but there's so much in there that's really not for kids, like death, PTSD, anxiety, war.....

I love it.

My older kids liked Gravity Falls. It's a cartoon with a significant adult following but I don't think it has anything that would be inappropriate for your son.

Quick addition to my earlier post: Avatar the Last Airbender (and its sequel series, Legend of Korra, which I haven’t seen yet) are available on Amazon Prime if you have it.

We like the Travel Channel. Mysteries at the Museum and Bizarre Foods are the ones we watch. House Hunters International (well, I like this show, my kids really don’t lol). We also really like the Discovery Life Channel but some shows may be a bit much. Animal Planet is really nice too and, surprisingly, the Weather Channel has very interesting shows.

Heartland, available for free on streaming sites, or on Netflix.

There are strong family values, and both the male and female characters are well represented as capable, reliable, and interesting.

My son loves watching Mr. Bean with me - the original TV series (not the movie). Laugh out loud funny! I think you can find a bunch of episodes on YouTube
