im looking for a good choc cake recipe. something that is chocolatey and "heavy" and not moist and fluffy like the hersheys one.
also want to be able to make cupcakes out of it (that don't just cave in like my reg recipe , which the mixture is too light and airy)
thanks in advance!

I'm not sure what you mean by fluffy or heavy but I also don't love the hersheys recipe and liked this one:

Einat's cake recipe

4 eggs
1 cup sugar
1 cup oil
1/2 tsp cinnamon
tsp coffee
vanilla
3 tbsps cocoa powder
3 tbsps drinking chocolate powder
1 cup sparkling water
1 cup self raising flour (if you don't have this use plain plus baking powder and bicarb - google for subsitiution amounts)

mix. Bake 30-45 mins at 350. When baked pour over top half cup of hot black coffee.

(there is a filling and topping recipe that go with this that are dairy. Let me know if you want it.)

Ask Debsey for her prune juice chocolate cake recipe. (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

I make cupcakes with (eggless) Wacky Cake batter and I add chocolate chips or a square or two of bittersweet chocolate to each cupcake. I find this cake is slightly firmer than the Hershey cake but no less chocolatey. Sometimes I throw on some chocolate chips as they are coming out of the oven and when they are melted I spread them around as "frosting".

If you like a bit of coffee flavor, I just made this recipe from a friend and it was delicious and dense, as opposed to fluffy.

7 eggs
4 cups sugar
4 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 Tbs baking powder
2 cups oil
1 1/2 cups cocoa
2 cups water
2 Tbs instant coffee granules

Mix eggs and sugar. Add other ingredients except water and coffee.

Mix coffee into 1 cup boiling water in separate bowl/cup. Add 1 cup cold water to get warm coffee. Add to batter. Bake at 360 until done.

This recipe looks like its been doubled. Do you think it can be cut in half successfully? If not - what size pan do you bake it in and if cupcakes, then how many does it make?

I also thought it was a ton, but it made 4 very nice long loaf pans (covered my oven rack perfectly). I would imagine it would be about 2 dozen large cupcakes, but I could be off. I once did an approximately 1/3 recipe, but I don't recall how much it made or how it was.

I think I might try halving it and baking in a 9x13.
I like the addition of the coffee and the fact that you say it is dense rather than fluffy.
I'm not a huge fan of the Hershey's cake either.

Probably won't be for a while 'cause I just made a chocolate cake for this past Shabbat but next time I make one I'll give this recipe a try.
