I did check it out. Conflating this with the harassment of an ordinary citizen for wearing a hat is the kind of "journalism" for which Breitbart is known.

Nice try, though!

So, let's get this straight: I say, "Many of the cited cases aren't relevant, but there are a number that are."

You then say, "Ha ha. Most of the cited cases aren't relevant."

Um, yeah. That's what I said.

Let's try this again:

1. The list compiled by Breitbart includes harassment and assaults. Many of the cases cited are not relevant. A number are relevant, including several specifically involving MAGA hats.

2. The cases cited by Breitbart are all linked to local news stories, which are generally linked to police reports. Therefore, your opinion of Breitbart is irrelevant.

3. Breitbart has been repeatedly found, including by the left-wing Guardian, to maintain high reporting standards. They obviously pick their stories to reflect a conservative bias, which they are honest about.

You asked me to prove that other MAGA hat-related assaults have occurred. There are a number of mentions of such altercations in that list, along with links.

So are you claiming that those assaults didn't take place? That the links Breitbart provided are false? That the local reporting is false? That the police reports are false? That there haven't been arrests of Antifa members for assault against people they've identified as Trump supporters?

I think most posters here can tell you that I put great effort posting in a restrained, non-patronizing manner. In fact I started a thread not long ago apologizing to an anonymous poster in a closed thread for suggesting that she was wrong when I meant to say that her facts were incorrect.

But I also assume that posters here address others in the manner in which they would like to be addressed, so I tend to match my tone to theirs while, yes, being more restrained. So if a poster tells someone she disagrees with that she ought to wear a tin-foil hat (as this poster did in another thread today), I'll assume that she likewise prefers to be addressed in a more confrontational manner. So I made a comment that was a bit snarky but that I considered less insulting.

No, and this assumption shows where the real racism is today.

Most normal people in America actually do not equate all African Americans with African Americans stuck in dead-end inner cities, miles away from jobs and opportunity. It's not 1960 any longer. Most people see, work with, and interact with people of different races to one degree or another, and even people who are fairly insulated from other groups are increasingly aware that there's a spectrum of educational and economic attainment within groups.

You're right. Most normal people don't conflate poverty and ghettos with African Americans. Trump has.

Quote:

What do you have to lose by trying something new, like Trump? You’re living in your poverty, your schools are no good, you have no jobs, 58 percent of your youth is unemployed — what the hell do you have to lose?”

58% of "your" youth -- all African American youth. Same "you" as "you're" living in poverty. "your" schools are not good. "you" have no jobs.

Quote:
The violence. The death. The lack of education. No jobs. We're going to work with the African-American community and we're going to solve the problem of the inner city. We're going to bring safety back. You can't walk out the street, you buy a loaf of bread and you end up getting shot. So we're going to work very strongly with the African American community.

Quote:
The Democrats have failed completely in the inner cities. For those hurting the most who have been failed and failed by their politician — year after year, failure after failure, worse numbers after worse numbers. Poverty. Rejection. Horrible education. No housing, no homes, no ownership. Crime at levels that nobody has seen. You can go to war zones in countries that we are fighting and it's safer than living in some of our inner cities that are run by the Democrats. And I ask you this, I ask you this — crime, all of the problems — to the African Americans, who I employ so many, so many people, to the Hispanics, tremendous people: What the hell do you have to lose? Give me a chance. I'll straighten it out. I'll straighten it out. What do you have to lose?"

What about the whites in the inner city? What about the majority of African Americans who don't live in poverty? Don't exist in Trump's world.

Notice that I said "people," never "you," because I don't know anything about you. I'm sincerely asking if people in general can have a conversation about politics without being condescending. Like, just without it at all.

I think equating a MAGA hat with the KKK is so indicative of the problems in politics today. The KKK has a long history of racism followed up with action - lynching, murders, arson, harrassment etc. Donald Trump may be a racist ******* who's policies you don't agree with (in fact, I don't agree with many of them either!) and think he should be voted out of office or impeached, but that doesn't make him the equivalent of the KKK.

I didn't vote for Donald Trump. I don't support his policies. I still recognize that he's not the evil of the KKK. He might turn out to be down the road (though I highly doubt that), but today a MAGA hat is NOT the equivalent of a KKK hood.

It's really not possible because as someone pointed out, our perspectives are just so far apart.

Some people look at Trump and see an obvious crook, a bloviating self promoter and narcissist who ONLY acts in his own interests, never in the interests of America.

Others see a proud American Pro-Israel president fulfilling every conservative fantasy of control of America for decades to come. Oh and has a slight verbal diarrhea problem, no big deal. How could a Jew NOT support Trump?

It's really hard to find middle ground here. Like it's very hard for me to see how a person reads Trump's crazy tweets and sees a normal person, let alone a person fit to lead the free world. That's why most Trump supporter here tell you that we just shouldn't pay any attention to his tweets (or his rallies, his speeches or his interviews).

I agree that not all of these instances are as bad as others, but you must agree that the 300 plus examples Breitbart lists show a disturbing trend. There is a growing number of people on the left who feel that if Trump is Hitler, his supporters are nazis. And why not punch a Nazi?

I went through Breitbart's list and deleted all the instances involving protests of public officials. I also deleted many instances that could be "jokes". But I did leave any threats to physically harm anyone, including a public official.
You are wrong when you say that "most" of these examples are just innocent protests. Most actually show people being harassed, threatened and even assaulted, often for simply supporting Trump.

How about when you asked me if I understand what freedom of speech means? Do you not see how patronizing that was?

And yes, as a side point I do understand what freedom of speech means.

Totally irrelevant to the discussion, other than as it serves to highlight the hypocrisy of those who claim to support it, yet are willing to use violence to silence those with whom they disagree. Which I assume was Natural mom's point; she was the poster who first mentioned freedom.

Eta. It's actually an interesting and complex legal issue: What constitutes "speech"; what constitutes protected speech; responsibility and duties of government vs private actors; etc.

But rather than discuss any of those issues, you implied that I fail to understand something that I myself just said. That personalized the discussion, so now we can debate my comprehension levels instead of the actual issues.

Actually, what frightens me the most is that I think I understand it.

What about the whites in the inner city? What about the majority of African Americans who don't live in poverty? Don't exist in Trump's world.

Sorry, but this is just silly. He was specifically addressing the problems faced by inner city African-American communities. He did not discuss white urban poverty in that particular speech, nor did he discuss grazing rights in the West nor issues confronting middle-class Americans of any shade. That wasn't the topic.

Once upon a time, I was a liberal . . . oh, wait. That's Brandon Straka's line!

Once upon a time, I was extremely measured in my responses and polite to a fault. I tried not to respond to insults or provocation. In return, Imamothers have called me a racist; called me a Nazi-sympathizer; have accused me of wishing rape on women; and have expressed the wish that they could inflict violence on me.

So I've had to toughen up. I don't consider that a good thing. But I'm one of the few Imamothers who is willing to get out there with her screen name and risk being called a racist or whatever the insult of the day is. The irony, of course, is that I was not a Trump supporter during the primaries and voted for him with reservations. But the more I've been attacked and seen others attacked, the more happy I am that he's President. Whatever faults I find with him, either personally or in terms of policy, I realize that I don't wish to embrace the worldview of most of those who oppose him.

Look, there was a time and place where a member of the KKK or white citizens council was a perfectly ordinary and respectable thing to be. They were your doctors, your judges, your mayors, your schoolteachers, your neighbors. A lot of them would have bristled at the suggestion that they were bigots. They weren’t hateful. They gave their maid their kids old clothes. They considered themselves moderate conservatives. The people who disagreed with them didn’t have the luxury of writing them off as fringe lunatics. Their views were held by a large percentage of the American population and were considered to be a legitimate “side” in the debates about a changing society. Now it’s considered extremely offensive to be compared to a KKK member. That’s a good thing.
But being a trump supporter is the 2018 equivalent. It just might take you another 40-50 years to realize it.

Wow I have lost all respect for anyone that can speak this way. Losing yourself once can be overlooked. But persistent nastiness is not excusable.

I’m a new poster and it sure doesn't mean much to you but I feel it has to be said.
Hearing attacks like this disinclines me from taking any of your ideas seriously.

Right. Kind of like actress Amber Heard warning her friends and neighbors to give their nannies, gardeners, and maids a ride home to avoid immigration checks at bus stops. How can she be a bigot? She's against Trump! She wants all those nice Central American people to come and work for a pittance rather than pay enough for someone to own a car . . .

I don't think we're going to have to wait 40-50 years to see where the hate really is . . .

Right, the libs are the real racists, just like it was racist to be against family separation (because it means ivory tower libs don’t care about sx trafficking) of course until trump reversed the family separation policy. That bold, visionary move made it okay to be against family separation again, and solidified why our dear leader is so great.

The racism there isn't what you think it is, of course. Its in assuming that most nannies and housekeepers are undocumented aliens.

But, of course, so does our government, setting up checkpoints to round up people who are just trying to earn a living.

Its so easy to pick on some random B-list celebrity, while ignoring the racism of the president you spend so much time supporting. And let's start with his blatantly racist birther lies. His reference to Mexicans as "rapists" and his statements that a judge with Latino ancestry must be biased. His racial baiting of Elizabeth Warren. His statement that the crowd at the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va., included “some very fine people.” His dismissal of majority black nations as “sh1thole countries.” His labeling an African-American member of Congress “low IQ.” And move on to everything else.

Why not pick on those comments? Instead of someone whose claim to fame is that she appeared in The Playboy Club, which apparently was a TV show in 2011, and used to be married to Johnny Depp. (Yeah, I had to look that up, because I never heard of her.)

That's what I assumed she meant. How else could it be understood as racist?

No, it wasn't racist to be against family separation, but a lot of people, including many here on Imamother, were naive about it. They were responding emotionally to the idea of crying toddlers being ripped from their mothers' arms, but that is a very tiny fraction of the situations involving minors.

S-x trafficking is a significant issue that ICE deals with, and one of the big pushes in the Trump administration has been to clamp down on s-x trafficking and Internet s-x crimes involving children. DOJ

So after everyone agreed that we don't want toddlers ripped from their mothers' arms, Trump signed a limited executive order to prevent that, and now the complaints are coming in that family reunification is taking too long. I should certainly hope so. The Obama administration's solution to the problem was to place minors with sponsors without doing background checks, leading not only to s-x trafficking but literal slavery. WaPo

So you can bring all the sarcasm you like to the table, the issue is not simple, and too many people seem willing to sell children into slavery simply to make the photo-ops at the border look better.
