I just ran into an easy and luscious-looking recipe for apple-filled challah. (It's on Joy of Kosher, if you are interested.) In the past have run into other filled challah recipes -- onion, garlic, chocolate....

I will absolutely make it for during the meal either way. But wondering if one can use it for actual hamotzi? How is a sweet'ish challah dough filled with apples or chocolate any different from a babka or kokosh?

I asked a rav if I use some of my challah dough to make rugelach, if it is hamotzei, and he said no, its mezonos.

If you are washing anyway on regular challah at the same time, not an issue, but pretty sure you can snack on apple filled challah without washing. it may be problematic to only have apple filled challah.

My father made something like this one year. He made sure to have a regular challah at the meal too to make hamotzi on.

Please ask your lor; if you eat a large enough shiur you may need to wash and bentch (like pizza). Also, I was told to take challah but without a bracha when I use 5 lbs of flour but divide the dough- some for challah and some for babke.

Onion filled is hamotzi (and delicious).
Once you’re putting in a chocolate filling, you’re entering the category of mezonos until you have enough to be kovea seuda for which washing and bentching are required. This amount decreases when you are eating other foods too.

Asking a handful of chocolate chips and a sweet topping will likely not change the brocha.

(Besides, is kokush cake good with honey?)
