Didn't know where to post this. I'm completely clueless embarrassed and need to hang a heavy framed picture, but the nails don't stay in the wall (sheetrock).

Can someone give me EXACT instructions on what to do? (Did I mention that I'm clueless?) I tried tapping on the wall to find a more solid area but it all feels/ sounds the same to me.

You need to buy a stud finder to find the framing to which the sheetrock is affixed. It's basically a magnet that detects the nails that are used. You want to nail into the framing sheetrock not just the hollow wall area of sheetrock.

Also buy super-heavy duty picture hooks and buy a higher rating than what you need. For instance, I have a large framed piece of art that is about 40 pounds about 4 feet by 3 feet. I could have gone with the next-size-smaller hook but instead bought the one rated for 100 pounds just to be safe. https://www.homedepot.com/p/OO.....72098

Hope this helps!

There are also "anchors" which hold the screw in place.
First you screw in the anchor, then the screw goes into the anchor.

The anchor has better grip in drywall

Call a handyman. Watch closely what he does, and you'll be able to do it yourself from now on. Totally worth the money! (Especially compared to the cost of fixing ruined drywall, and broken glass when your picture falls off the wall. )

Assuming you are in the US, get that gadget mentioned above. Stroke it along the wall until the pin strands up. Find the exact spot and mark it with an X in pencil. Find the ones above, below and to either side.
You should get an idea of where the 2x4s are that a screw can hold on to.
