The minhag to buy a new knife- do you have to buy a new knife, or if you have one that you bought but never used, does that work if you use it for rosh hashana for the first time? And, I've read in one place that it should be non serrated, but other places didn't mention that. Can it be serrated?

I thought someone else would know better but no one answered so I'll tell you what I think. A new knife never used sound fine to me. It's a minhag not halacha so I would think unused is new. About serrated I have no clue.

I've never heard of this minhag. Would someone explain it and it's origins?

The source for this
החותך חיים לכל חי. He should cut out for life all living things.
That’s what I learnt. So yes, my family has a minhag to buy a new knife. And never heard about serrated.
I buy the knife that I need and just use it for the first time on Rosh Hashana. This year I happened to need a small serrated one. DH will cut the hamotzi with it and then it goes into use for whatever I need it that year

We have thid minhag. It has to be non serrated. And should be used until the end of succos because until than were not zigaled-stamped into the book of life.I dont know the sourse. And our minhag is also to use a non serrated knife for cutting challa at the sueda all year long.

The minhag is a new knife, but a never used knife sounds new.

The knife should not be serrated. I could get you the reason/source if you wish.
