Hi,

How much should a small family (1-2 kids) be spending on groceries? Living in town.
Any tips for saving on groceries are appreciated!

Stock up on sale items. Plan a menu & go with a list. Compare prices & go to the cheapest place for food. Buy only what you need. More expensive or fancier foods that are not necessities don't buy or save for special occassions. You can buy some bulk stuff for cheaper by Costco or Bjs ( no perishables like household stuff or detergents)

Review your receipts to see which are the big ticket items. When I make an order & am surprised at total....I look through the items & then realize some stuff that are so expensive which I didnt even know. Also produce prices change daily according to market so u need to check every fruit or veg what the price is for that day before filling up a bag

Yes but how practical is buying in bulk for small families (who often have small apartments)?

Another tip don't go with your kids because you end up having to buy all the goodies they see

About order amounts it varies. Every family has different eating needs & every store has different prices. Also some people have same menu every week so their orders are pretty much same amount each time, and some change around, so different every time. Some schools provide breakfast & lunch. Some even have to pack lunches for their kids. Some men buy lunch on the go, some take along from home. Some kollel guys come home to a sit down lunch during break....

I dont live in brooklyn but I save a ton of money getting most of my staple items at Trader Joes and then getting meat and cheese and milk at the kosher grocery store.
