My close friend is visiting NY to look for a wedding dress. She has struck out at various gemachim due to her size and is feeling very discouraged. She said the only bigger gowns she's tried on look very matronly. I'm located out of town, so I'm clueless. She's a size 14/16. Loves ball gowns.

She specifically doesn't want to spend? It's hard to find decent plus size in a gemach.

She's not against spending--but also Doesn't want to have to build up a dress.

I also didn't want to build up a dress, and I was about a size 18 at my wedding. I ordered a custom gown from China (this shop: http://www.jasminesbridalshop.com/). It cost around $600, I think? When I ordered, they said that they'd only do dresses based on photos, but they were totally okay with making a dress more modest looking. It doesn't really work if the wedding is very soon though.

Augenbrauns, rental in Monsey and Lakewood.
Nicest people. They make sure to carry all sizes.

Um... size 14-16 is plus size???
That's heavier regular but not plus!!!
Either way, good luck. Upsetting to add this as another prewedding stress...
