There are a million mechina courses, that span a whole spectrum. Some are even secular.
Most of the dati mechinot are not really about 'army', and more about Torah, hashkafa, building up motivation and so on.
You have to ask your son which one he wants, they vary in style.

He needs to give you names.
There is a vast array nowadays and the variety is huge.
My DD is also checking out mechinot for next year...

Yes. A lot of young men and women who intend to serve in the Israeli army, whether after making aliyah or otherwise, do a gap year mechina program in preparation. There are a lot of different programs, so its hard to say what any one is like.
