I think it's נ-ג-ד but I'm not sure why- the נ is never used.

From what I understand, the shoresh of both is with the nun. But it's probably too confusing for kids. I remember this vaguely but I don't really understand it

here's a link with a chart that shows that the shoresh of haggadah and vehigadita is with a nun
https://he.wiktionary.org/wiki.....D7%94
If you click on the letters of the shoresh in the chart, it takes you to the page of that shoresh

Oh yay, this is fun!! Takes me back to high school.
Okay.
להגיד:
The shoresh, according to modern hebrew rules, has to be נגד
if it would be מגד the word would be להמגיד
if it would be יגד the word would be להוגיד
And so on.
There is a rule called פ"נ- which means the first letter of the shoresh is a nun. Then, in binyan hef'il/huf'al it is deleted, and there is a dagesh in the next letter. - In the gimmel, in this case.
This is similar to the words להגיר, להגיף, להגיש

This is to show all the teachers you're not teaching in vain!!
But seriously? I went to an Israeli school. To me this is like asking about quadratic equations.. It's in your brain forever.

Took me right back to high school with you! Smile
Just wanted to say, the rules of nun as first letter of the shoresh aren't modern Hebrew. The rules of conjugating verbs are from lashon kodesh. You'll find dozens of examples of this shoresh used this way (with the nun dropped) throughout Tana"ch.
