Looking for reading material for my 12 yr old girl who is a voracious reader and reads on a high school level.
She has read all the harry potters, boxcar children, american girl doll books, the "who was" series, etc etc.
I did suggest classics like Sherlock Holmes but it sounds "too old-fashioned" to her. I would love to expand her horizons a bit but am having trouble finding something good and appropriate...
TIA!

Have you seen appropriate (maybe a better word than kosher) secular booklists? There used to be one on chinuch.org but it's on another site now.

The Neverending Story
Howl’s Moving Castle
Haroun and the Sea of Stories
Sara, Plain and Tall
The Hawkins Series
The Railway Children

Sometimes old-fashioned is ok Smile

If she hates all of these, get back to me.

The Anne of Green Gables series is perfect for that age.

PinkFridge, there is still the list on chinuch.org, but I find it doesn't have too many teen- age books. I would love to find such a list!

sequoia - thanks so much, I will try these....

Are you sure anne of green gables is good for this age? It is listed on amazon for ages 8-10?

Looking forward to more ideas....Thanks!

The Amazon levels are probably due to content matter, rather than readability. I can't imagine a 9 year old independently reading Anne books without a lot of help. I would recommend it to 10-13 year olds. (I say this as a certified reading specialist and experienced teacher.)

What are your hashkafic standards? If you don’t want any romantic negia or references at all, I doubt I can recommend anything for teens- you are best sticking to classics and kid books. But if you were ok with a bit (like in the last 3 Harry Potter’s) then I have a few suggestions.

War stories
1)The book thief (there is only one chapter there were she blushes imagining something to do with a boy)
2)The girl with the blue coat (from what I remember it’s good- but u may want to double check)
3)the boy in the striped pajamas
4)diary of Anne Frank

Fantasy
1) Steelheart
2) the hobbit (totally clean)
3) Patricia c. Wrede books
4) princess academy
5) Gail Carson Levine books
6) narnia (if you think that’s ok... narnia deserves a thread of its own)

Historical
1) there are a lot of good Dear America books
2) the lions of Little Rock

Contemporary
Ummmmmmm... sorry out of luck

Diary of Anne Frank--it has been republished with more s-xual content then the original (which Otto Frank ha requested be censored) so that may or may not be of concern.

Has your daughter ever read any Diana Wynne Jones books? If she liked Harry Potter, she will probably love those books. Possibly the Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper-- also fantasy, but without the humorous tone of J.K.Rowling or Diana Wynne Jones.

Frances Hodgeson Burnett books are great. Avi has some very good ones, especially The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle and The Man Who Was Poe. Agatha Christie books are more difficult, but they are great.

The war that saved my life by Kimberly Bradley brubaker
Septimus heap series by angie sage
The Greenglass house milford
Echo by pam munoz Ryan
Refugee by alan gratz
Mighty miss malone by Christopher paul curtis
Journey down the river sea by ibbotsen.

What do you mean by high school level? The books you mentioned are not high school level, and neither are my recommendations; more middle school.

Peony by Pearl s. buck

It takes place in 1850 China in a Jewish community. I loved the story and learned about Jewish life in China.

If she enjoyed Harry Potter, try Keeper of the Lost Cities. It’s a huge hit here with my Harry Potter loving kids. So far there are 7 very long books in the series.

I loved the Frances Hodgson Burnett books ( A little princess, the secret garden).

I also loved the slightly more challenging biographies, such as Florence Nightingale, Elizabeth Blackwell, etc. (found in the teen/pre-teen sections of the library).
