I don't live in NY, either. I just find that very, very hard to believe. Americans tend to be very prudish about these things being taught to young kids in school, believe it or not, and if you've ever read anything about the parental complaints, lawsuits, and requests for various kids books to be removed from public school libraries or problems over showing a PG movie for even just a whiff of the things she mentions, you would, too.
And I absolutely do not believe the stuff about choosing religions. Separation of church and state is taken very seriously!! Just one parental lawsuit would cost the school district serious $. Maybe she is describing school in the UK, but that just wouldn't happen in an American school.

I didn't read the whole thread, just skimmed it, but I'm chiming in to say I agree with you. I'm curious which state even allows that kind of talk before middle school. Just showing a PG13 movie in 6th grade to 11-12 yr olds requires a parent's signature beforehand.

That state sounds so strange.

Why can’t we just teach our boys secular subjects in relation to Torah and make everyone happy? Like learn geometry, and apply it to halachos of building the mishkan, mizbeyach, etc. Learn science and apply it to hilchos shabbos and bosser v’chalav. Geography and history and apply it to Jewish history. Learn it all in Yiddish for all I care! Torah is not separate from general knowledge, they are closely related. The only thing that wouldn’t be covered is English. So that will be an hour a day.

I agree with your post. The qouted made me LOL
So close to home...

Btw an hour English is what the mainstream chassidishe mosdos currently have.
But they are doing it at the end of the day when the kids are exhausted already. Whatever.
I dont enjoy this subject.
I don't have any power to change anything and the leaders that do have the power are not in touch with the reality.

Of course we only want children and eidimer talmidei chachomim but one day most of them will have to join the workforce.

And without basic English there are no big opportunities. Stop bringing me examples of the 5% millionaires and the 20% otherwise well-offs.

Lets talk about the 75% that need a well paying job in order to make ends meet.

No Rabbi in the world will give this child-now-father-to-ten-kids 100k a year in the place of the skilkset that he didn't get when he was learning in this Rabbi's mosed.

I'm usually worried that people who want to bring their children up in ignorance will move to my part of the world but with Satmar I can be confident that that's not gonna happen.

This all hullabaloo of english education started with Yaffed founder Naftali Moster. An ex chassid who seems to have a chip on his shoulder.

Look at lots of successful business owners and employees. Quite a few haven't received a college education and are very successful
(And I have a bone to pick with dishonest people which I'm sure a couple of you posters will try to point out, yehh yehhh, heard your anti chassidish rants in the past, please don't bring it up, there's plenty non chassidish dishonest people out there too)

Multiple choice for you and the ones that agree with you.

Circle the statement that describes you best;

1. My husband is well off

2. My parents are supporting us

3. Our kids are young and we are still managing on a small income because my employer is also giving us insurance

4. Our kids are young and we are manging on our small income because we are arranging it in a way so we are still eligible for Medicaid

5. We have all the goodies. Somehow.

6. We have no issue getting donations

7. I admit that I am out of touch with our own reality or with the reality of my community.

Interesting, thanks for explaining. So aside from Hebrew language, are there others that can possibly be counted? eg. chumash, parsha etc?

Even Hebrew language can count. Aside from fulfilling the HS language requirement, beginning in pre-k, it's super easy to teach a language class aligned to ELA standards.

I could personally rewrite most school's curricula to follow the newly clarified NYS standards fairly easily. However the ones that offer zero to minimal math will never work.

You forgot to add a number 8. None of the above

My husband is not well off
My parents don't support us
My kids are teens, husband gets insurance thru work because all employees get that
My kids are teens, I pay for full insurance for kids and no I don't have food stamps, medicaid or section8 or any other programs out there. I fully believe in reporting income honestly and if I need to fudge anything I'm not interested.
We don't have all the "goodies" and I take offense at people (like u) automatically assuming the worst
I don't solicit for donations
And I am very in touch with what goes on in the community

My husband is a very hardworking employee who doesn't get paid what he's worth and I dabble in ebay to try to bring in some income too.

But all of the above doesn't matter to you because you seem to be the type of person who no matter how wrong your opinion is, the louder you yell the more right you are.

Anything else I can help you with?

I know it's difficult, but all day I hear mothers complaining about this issue.

Can you not do something about it? Does your son HAVE to learn in a chassidish cheder?

I sent my so to a new chassidish cheder, they had promised to focus more on secular studies. Turned out, their more was my less.

I did something about it. I moved my son to a school where secular studies are extremely important. Guess what? his kodesh studies (Gemara, chumash etc) are not suffering for it.

He has 3 hours of secular studies a day. That's as much as most girls school have.

I'm so thankful to Hashem for guiding us. My son is really happy, we're happy. I believe we made the right choice.

Please note, we're not any less chassidish then we were when he was in the chassidish cheder.

You mentioned that there are plenty successfull businessmen.
Did you mean plenty of successfull businessmen that don't know English?

If this is what you meant, can you please give me an exact count of the successfull businessmen that dont have a good English that you know?

You are being extremely rude, and using the amother shield to boot. There's no need for personal attacks if you don't want to answer the question.

This has zilch to do with college education. We're discussing elementary school, my dear Watson.

If you'd really know me, even just from here, you would know that I appreciate honest feedback.

So you think I am bored and I have lots of time. That doesn't say anything about the content of my posts.

Instead of typing those 3 sentences you could've written a number. Much easier especially if you dont have time.

As a side note, If you are Satmar, it would've given a better impression had you remained respectful. Youre online anyway. Do it the right way.

Hatzlacha.

I used to think like you, that it’s so simple to switch a boy out of a chasidish cheder.

When my son was in 8th grade, I planned on applying to Flatbush high schools.

We consulted with someone who works in a Flatbush yeshiva and were told the secular education there is not much better than in the Chasidish yeshivas, and if this was the only purpose for applying to the school, we would be very disappointed.
