I don't know specifics in this case, but there is such a thing as giving a baby boy a name before the bris, to strengthen tefillos. It's not the first time I've heard of it.

We gave our baby a name at 2 weeks, and his bris was only at 12 weeks.
As you say, it strengthens the tefillot.
So sorry to hear this news.
