Does anyone know of any vocational programs for older teen boys? I am trying to help find some options for the son of a family friend who for various reasons has not been able to finish high school. He is a kind, soft spoken boy, and is able to learn, but traditional classrooms and academics are not the path for him currently.
I am certain that he could do very well in a hands on profession, and learning a skill/trade would do wonders for his self esteem.
Any information/direction would be so appreciated....

I'm not not whether it still exists, but there is/was a small yeshiva in Lancaster, Pennsylvania focusing on learning building trades. It is/was geared to post high school boys.

Are you looking at any particular geographical area, or where anywhere in the world do?

Sorry!!! it was an oversight... I need something in Brooklyn (oh boy, now I am really going to get it... here I am just feeding the stereotype of us Brooklynites assuming we are the center of the universe!)

I know a few HS boys who are good hashkafically, nice kids, not so academic, would be such a great idea for them if its done in a good sviva.
if no such a program, who is picking up the glove?
it takes a caring parent/ friend to create a new reality.
we all know some special people who started good program and benefited generations!

That is a very sweet thought... I just don't think I could quite pull it off at this point tho....

I don't know much about it, but check out Mesivta Shaare Arazim, which is run by Rabbi Zev Freundlich, in Monsey.
Their website is at https://shaareiarazim.com .
The website isn't very thorough, so see their brochure for more detailed info: https://shaareiarazim.com/video/msa.pdf
It's not exactly a vocational school, but it lists many alternative classes, such as woodworking, music, cooking, a marching band, etc.
Best of luck.

Thanks Blue Rose... unfortunately, he has sort of given up on his education, he's had quite a bit of....... unfairness..... in his life, to put it mildly, and has very low confidence and self esteem. He is seeing a therapist, but really needs something that will help toward his future, a profession, training in something he could work at, and enjoy and feel good about.
I wonder if there are any professionals out there who take on apprentices.... like in the olden days....

hey! its not often that I recognize teh name of a school, but for once I do. I dont really have information about it, just that my friend just mentioned it as a posibility for her 14year old son who is not succeeding in teh yeshiva system and is ina non-jewish school right now.
defintiely take a look at the website...

Old thread, but I'm bumping this up. The op wanted for Brooklyn, I'll take for anywhere in the US, but prefer east coast. A dorm is a huge plus and for a high schooler. TIA

Try contacting Yeshiva Doresh in North Miami Beach (Aventura), FL. I think they have some sort of vocational track.

Thank you, but I know about that school. My nephew goes there. I don't think it's for my son because when I spoke to them they said he needs to be evaluated and while he is being evaluated, he's doesn't need a school IMO that specifically asks that.
