I'd like to take my elementary grade school kids away on a quick road trip during winter break from a Sunday-Monday. Looking for suggestions for something close to NY that would be fun to do in the winter but can also be covered in such a short period of time...

Thank you but Would like it to be overnight. Local snow tubing will be ridiculously crowded during winter break

Just note that they aren’t open every day (if I remember correctly, Sunday they are open but Monday closed)

Blue Mt. in the Poconos has great snow tubing, and because it's a drop farther and off the beaten path, is usually not crowded (esp. on a Monday), but check that its hours work for you. You could stay in the Poconos and go to Crayola Factory or one of the caves in the area as well. I absolutely love NH in the winter, but it's probably farther than you want to drive for just 1 night.

Great idea! Thank you! I didn't think the caves would be open in the winter

Is mountain creek a resort? Would they allow people to snow tube if they are not staying there?

Mt. Creek is a place where people ski and tube. Pay per service, no problem just to go for the day.

Tours of caves. We like Indian Echo Caverns, but that's farther west near Lancaster. Closer to Blue Mt. is Crystal Cave in Kutztown, PA, which I see is sadly closed until March 1.

Why don't you start your kids skiing? There are great deals on beginner rentals, lessons, and lift tickets.

Skiing can be a great family trip, but maybe not something you want to try to teach them on a one day overnight trip. But if you have a little more time, I say go for it! And if not, these caves sound great!

Philadelphia - museums, mint, old jail, bell, lego land, aquarium
Crayola factory, there is a cave tour in the area

Most cave tours are open in the winter because the temp in the cave never changes. But they may be closed due to lack of visitors.

Washington,dc

I was also going to say snow tubing. We’ve gone places that weren’t packed.

I think dc might need a couple of days. But also, with this government shut down going on so long I'm not confident there will be much open at that time
