Shirley Jackson is great, but be careful. Some of her stories are really dark. Some, like "Charles" are amazing.

Anyone remember the story Gaston by William Saroyan? that's a great story for a HS literature class.

They Grind Exceedingly Small is also a great story.

Just makes sure these stories aren't in the curriculum for older grades, because they lose their impact once you read the surprise ending.

Yep Charles and they grind exceedingly small are definitely from the memorable ones. Also After 20 years.

Loved Charlotte's Web. Read it with my (now adult) daughter years ago.

But there's something about the short story impact that just provides this punch to the gut feeling. Like Charles or The Test- it's cool how the mood shifts in just a few changes and you see the world differently.

The Countess and the Impossible by Richard Thurman. Easy to google the text, just make sure you find the complete story, because there are a lot of retellings and abridged versions.

Google was no use as I didn't remember the title.

I am finding the stories on this thread fascinating. But I have to second NOT reading a story but having handouts for the girls to choose from, sudokus, crosswords or word finds about the topic of the test if possible, etc. They'll finish at different times and will also find this relaxing and a good way to unwind.
