Help! I feel like I'm drowning! My daughter can be a caring, fun, loveable kid one minute, then a terror the next! When she wants to she can be helpful but when not she will not listen to anything I say. She is heavier than me so I can't move her when she is affecting other kids in the house. She will kick, punch, scratch and bite me if I try to. My husband can move her physically and can yell louder than me so she is more responsive to him.

Sometimes I just ignore her, but there is a household that needs to run and other kids who are affected by her moods. She will take away their books and toys or block them from going where they need to or even away from her.

She is on 3 meds, working with a psychiatrist and a therapist twice a week. She is definitely better than she used to be, but is still so hard.

I feel like a total failure because I can't seem to help her or protect my other kids when she gets into one of her moods.

This is really hard.
If she is not getting better with psych meds, definitely have her seen by a PANDAS specialist. PANDAS can look like ODD, and won't get better until she gets the proper treatment

Have you read the explosive child by Ross Greene? It is hands down the best method for helping kids like this. It is evidence based and well researched. You can access a lot of the information that is in the book at www.livesinthebalance.org and if you do facebook there is a great group called the B-Team.

Give yourself credit for everything you are doing for your daughter. Take time to take care of yourself because this unbelievably difficult job takes a lot out of you. Try to work as closely as possible with the therapist, even scheduling sessions for yourself, to learn how to deal with her at home. Hatzlacha.
