Nurse practitioner s can and do open their own practices and can even have social workers work with or under them.

My experience as a social worker - now that I have just a few years experience and an LCSW, finding a job is not the issue. I have a decent job with very decent pay, albeit fee for service. The problem is complete burnout. I don’t agree about not being able to find jobs, as the agencies I know of are always looking.

What is the source of your burnout?

You have to constantly be completely emotionally present, no matter what else is going on in your life. It’s tough.

As a SW student who is starting grad school soon (already have a BSW) I'm finding this thread very disheartening! Are there any actual social workers on this forum that can give me a better picture of what the field *really* looks like for newbies? I would like to hear directly from the source rather than cousins of, neighbors of, etc.

It's the unfortunate reality - I'm a licensed masters level MH practitioner and see this across the board. 5 years after graduation only 3 of the students in my graduating class (I'm one of the 3) have their license, and one of those has it because they went to a special PhD program where they got their hours there while studying for the PhD. My peers are working at starbucks, childcare, yoga studios... It's difficult to find placement to complete the requirements. Many students fail the examinations at least once. And after graduation it's hard to find a decent job.

In my experience it's not worth spending the big time $$ it costs for graduate school for a degree that doesn't earn it back within a reasonable timeframe let alone support a family.

I'm the poster who went back and got another degree - MBA. Cheaper, faster, no unpaid internship, no clients threatening to harm me. Better paying jobs available now with lots of opportunities for advancement.

Yeah I'm burnt out but I bought into the bridge that was sold - and that was a huge mistake. Please don't jump in unless you're sure you're ready to take this on with ALL that it entails.
