El Al is expensive, can anyone tell me about a good alternative that's cheaper and not too stressful?

United is usually the cheapest direct.
With stopovers, I've found good flights with SwissAir, which is a great airline. Basically any stop in Europe is manageable because it's not out of the way. I rate Swiss as best, Alitalia as worst.
Googletravel is my favorite website for booking.

I've also found great priced stopover flights with swiss. Its also an easy airport to travel to and from if you want to explore Zurich.
I've used Turkish and it was fine.

Search Google travel with your dates and airports. There's no absolute best/ cheapest, it varies. Unless there's a country you absolutely don't want to stop in, there aren't major differences between the regular carriers.
