So long that you need to keep it closed you are going to have a mold smell. As far as cleaning the mold, what worked for me was leaving bleach soaked rags overnight directly in the gasket where mold collects. Wipe, then run a clean cycle .

Remove door of the closet. If you dont leave door of w/machine open u will always have problems with smell and mold.

The front loafers must be kept open I’m always sticking the hamper in front so they are not closed. The smell is horrid when closed. In order to get the bad smell out bleach it then to the afresh then keep it open. But you should all know I had an old front loader got a new one recently and the new one if there’s a load left in the washer an hour it smells already it’s extremely hard I’m hating it

My friend told me about taking two Cascade pods - it's used to clean dishes Ina dishwasher.. put it into your washer and run either an Affresh cycle or the hottest cycle. U cannot imagine to amount of gunk you will find once the load is done. I was horrified when I opened the door of my washer...ndunno how my clothing smelled fresh with all the gunk that was hiding an all the little spaces. I cleaned the inside of my machine with a rag, discardede all the gunk and repeated the cycle again using two more pods, more gunk came out... by now it's addictive... I do it once a month and there's always gunk coming out but not as much as the first time I did it. Try it and let me know the results!
