Is it still the case that there are jobs in certain communities that pay differently based on marital status and number of children?

I totally agree with this.

These types of posts always leave me scratching my head.

Communism doesn’t work.

You think the sahm mom has it easier then you?

Then do what she does.

I happen to be a SAHM that pays full tuition. Maybe I should watch your kids anyway because it isn’t fair that my husband makes enough money to let me stay home?
(Ftr, I’d be glad to watch your kids if you ask nicely. I love helping people.)

Life isn’t fair people.

Do the best you can with the resources you have. Don’t worry about anyone else.

You’ll be a lot happier. I promise.

It's a lot easier to be satisfied if your resources are more than enough for your family.

Who says I’m sartisfied? There are so many things in life I wish that I had. Both emotionally and physically. But it doesn’t pay to look at everyone else. The only thing I can do is work on myself and try my best with the resources I was given.

Besides, I know people who get tuition breaks but go on lavish vacations, drive fancy cars, wear high end clothes, etc...

Is that fair? I don’t do any of that. But I probably could if I got a tuition break.

Still not my business.

My kids school fundraises for scholarships separately. So no families in the school are directly paying for increases based on families who don't pay full tuition. It frees up a lot of resentment.

Many schools around me assign a salary to a parent who isn't working without a valid reason and then base tuition off of that. That also frees up resentment.

I've met a few people who view tuition scholarships as "discounts" and not as charity. They don't treat scholarships the way they should IMO. Taking charity is fine if you need it, but it is charity raised from the funds of others.

I think there are some items that schools allow as an expense that personally I think should be removed. Extras like cleaning help should not count as an expense. Instead, we should have a community tzedaka to provide cleaning help for those who need it. That way, if you really need something like cleaning help, schools don't effectively have to raise funds for it. The way it is now, schools are fundraising for basically everything, placing the burden unfairly on the school.

In the US, its illegal.

Why would you think that its not a bad thing? People should be paid for the job that they're doing, not based on their employer's preconception of what they need.

tan- can you explain? I can only think of reasons why its a bad idea to pay someone more just because they are married or have more kids and none for why its a good reason. usually I'm pretty good at seeing both sides but I just can't here.

The good part is at least that the breadwinner for a large family is at least getting a raise & not staying with his beginners pay when he started as a single & with the same pay to cover 10 people.

A male breadwinner. If the husband is learning and the wife is working, she still gets paid less in these workplaces than her male counterpoint.

The bad part is that the raise is not based on anything work related that the employee did. He is being paid to have kids.

Funny. I seem to think pay for your job should be based on job skill and performance. As said earlier, entitled seems to be the word.

And whats sonbad about encouraging the birth of future employees? If you're a woman in that job ask for a raise.

So basically we accept that socialism is alive and well in this type of community.

This is changing. I get paid equal per hour in a teaching job as DH. Just saying.

There are many people who ar single or have smaller families than they'd like, and it's NOT by choice. So they should be working in the company for twenty years and doing excellent work, and still be getting paid less than a co-worker who has been there seven years and has 5 kids?

Forgot to add to this that in exchange, my maternity leave options are dismal. They expect as much from me as they do from him. Still worth it to me, though.

Shlomo and Shmuel start work the same day for the same position.

Shlomo is a mediocre employee at best. But he's married to Fertile Myrtle. Six babies in 5 years. (TRIPLETS, can you believe it!)

Shmuel is spectacular at his job. He and his wife want to save, so they're on BC for a while. Then, unfortunately, they have a fertility issue.

Is it really fair to pay Shlomo more? And how does Shmuel pay for fertility treatments if he's being paid less?
