What do I do with my 2yo who refuses to eat?
I'm a speech therapist, and I took him to a speech therapist, and he just wont eat! I tried EVERYTHING. He'll like something one day, and hate it the next. I never know what he'll eat. It's getting impossible!
Any help?

Have you done basic blood work to rule out anemia, which can cause disinterest in eating?

Also you need a feeding specialist, not a regular speech therapist... I assume you know this but just in case... A feeding specialist specialises in this and can offer you better suggestions.

Also let me add that when I finally find the food he likes, he gobbles it up like he's starving

What did the specialist try that didn't work? How long has this been going on? Any other medical concerns/ history, or allergies?

Does he eat all different types of textures or only certain ones? It sounds more like cravings (which vary from day to day) which could be related to either some type of vitamin or mineral deficiency, or bacterial or yeast overgrowth. Any other symptoms?

When he gobbles up the food, is he stuffing his cheeks and kind of gulping it down or is he actually chewing and swallowing appropriately?

Let us know how blpod work goes. I recently had great success switching my child from a regular iron supplement to a supplement with other nutrients that help digest iron

Try a BCBA who specializes in feeding.

Thiamine (vit b1) for appetite, zinc for texture issues in mouth. remove gluten and dairy if kid seems to be restricting themselves to that, they are addictive and kid will stick to them exclusively if offered. rule out pain, allergies, reflux. After that, Ellyn Satter and the division of responsibility in feeding.

Does he have pimples/thrush in the mouth?
I would try protein shake or pediasure, to malke sure he gets good nutrition and is full. (I give that to all kids daily. Some are choosy with food and I give it even just to know they ate well).

Just be aware that if you're actively working on improving feeding, something like pediasure can work against you because the child feels full and has less appetite.

You could try a protein shake to get some nutrients in but please don’t use pediasure. Read the ingredients label- it’s terrible. You can do a google image search to see. Second ingredient is sugar. Here are the first few ingredients listed so you can get an idea- water, sugar, corn maltodextrin, milk protein concentrate, high oleic safflower oil, canola oil, soy protein isolate. It also has carrageenan which is highly irritating to the digestive tract.

I truly appreciate your response regarding pediasure. I give my kids protein shake daily and it's expensive. The kids pediatrician just recommended pediasure and I was considering switching over, as that is paid by insurance. My DS has digestive issues, so I guess I wont switch now. Thanks for sharing this crucial information.

No he doesnt have thrush. He used to eat so well until recently. As a baby, he didnt stop. He was a humongous fatso pudgeball, and he was so cute and mushy. A few months ago, he started slowing down. Just like 2 or 3 weeks ago, he just stopped eating.
