Do you pronounce it "Yah - ale" or "Yuh - el" ? Or a different emphasis?
That's the best way I can phonetically spell it.

I had a friend who pronounced the Ya as in TAtty, and one who said it as "yuh".

Thanks everyone. I love the name Yael, pronounced the way most people here said, Yuh-elle. I didnt want to pick a name that people would pronounce differently ( I have heard Yuh-ale, but seems less common). Of course this is only a small sampling of people, but it gave me a pretty good idea.

I've heard it pronounced wrongly as Ya-HELL by someone not religious who didn't know how to pronounce.

Are you sure she pronounced it wrong? Yahel is a name that seems to be gaining popularity here in Israel.

I don't correct people. It just drives me crazy. I tell people that I'll answer to pretty much everything  YAel, Ya-Ale, Yale, whatever. But I definitely prefer YaEL.

My name is Yael and I pronounce it Ya-ELL. But years ago I had an Israeli acquaintance (I'm American) who corrected me and said, "it's not Ya-ELL, it's Ya-AYL" which he pronounced with that nice light Israeli L sound and vowel was a true tzeirei as it is spelled, between EH and AY.
All that said, I am called every variation including Yale and I'll answer to everything.
