I roasted my seder plate egg and it cracked open a bit. Does it need to be entirely whole and intact, or is it fine to be partially cracked open?

Ha, thanks! In the past somehow I was able to brown it without exploding it!

I hardboiled the egg first, then stick it in the oven.

How long do you roast the egg, and on what temperature? Thanks.

Or use a pair of tongs to hold it over a flame.

Question for Chabadniks. I was looking for something, and came across a Chabad page where they said that when its time for the meal, you remove the egg and eat it (along with other eggs, I presume). Is this done? We just kinda leave the egg there.

preheat the oven to 350. boil the egg about 13 minutes then place in oven. Roast until starts to get brown and then cracks a little. I didn't time it....

I am Chabad and have never heard of roasting the egg. We just hardboil it and we eat it dipped in salt water at the beginning of the meal

We’re not Chabad. Dh eats from the seder plate at the appropriate times. For us the ke'ara is not just symbolic, it’s practical.
Boil the egg then put it on the grates of your (gas) stove over a very low flame. Turn it occasionally. If you watch it well, it won’t burst.

In full disclosure, the site didn't mention roasting the egg, just boiling it. I'm just glomming all the egg-stuff together.

And thanks for the response. Interesting. The egg is DH's favorite part of the meal, but not from the seder plate. So I was curious.

I put it on a silver foil on the stove, looked away for a few seconds and it popped with a loud bang! Was just a crack open, didn't explode so was still able to use it.
That's for the kaarah. Eggs at the beginning of the meal are hard boiled. We didn't eat from the kaarah besides the charoses to dip in.
