Fiction - “The Betrayal” by M. Kenan and the others in the series (kind of historical fiction)

I've been wondering what category those books go into. I love them but they're, like you said, only kind of historical fiction. Not based on any real history but it takes place in an ancient past with a cool, very well established backdrop, a Jewish kingdom.

There must be a term for creating a mythical past like that, in a similar way that fantasy writers create worlds, but without the fantasy part.

In part I love them because they’re well-written and interesting, but I also love them because of how original they are.

I only read Jewish books, and there are generally only so many ideas and themes that are used. (I understand this is because there is a particular range of what is considered appropriate, and I’m okay with that. I enjoy them anyway.) But it’s such a pleasure to read a book that’s so different!

They're great. Creative and great character development. The Outcast was my favorite.

I have some more. I can't believe I'm remembering so many good frum books that I enjoyed so much and would love to buy and reread : )

Fiction- The Mission by Chaim Eliav
Historical Fiction- The Pomegranate Pendant by Devora Waysman
Nonfiction- Blue Star over Red Square by Carmela Raiz
Holocaust- Miracles by Frieda Bassman (Recent book so less nostalgic for me than the rest but entirely gripping and life-affirming)
YA- The Family Y Aguilar by Marcus Lehman
Cookbook - The Dairy Gourmet by Tastebuds Cafe
Jewish- Rav Hirsh's commentary on Tanach
Memoir- Out of the Depth by Rabbi Lau (also newish)

1) Search my Heart and The Group and The Judge
2) Awareness
3) Alone in the Forest
4) A Light for Greytowers and Family for Awhile and The Lost Children of Tarshish
5) Dining in
6) Circle, Arrow, Spiral
7) Wings (and all of Meir Uri Gottesman’s books)
8) Exiles of Crocodile Island and This is America (both by Henye Meyer) and The Promise of Freedom and Chains
9) Miracle Ride and My Life on Wheels

This was very hard to do because gingertop won’t let more than one per category. Edited to cheat the rules.

I liked Baron Korff. I guess that would be historical fiction?

Guess so. Now I have to reread it if passes your muster. (I remember how elegantly you eviscerated a certain huge novel that I loved, wondering if you would chime in here ;-D)

I usually stay far away from Holocaust books, since I cannot bear the horror.
But Go my Son took my breath away!
Just a young yeshiva bochur, Chaim Shapiro was so strong, and brave and brilliant!

Also, circle arrow spiral, and the pomegranate pendant. Love them both!

So many great books mentioned on this thread, yet somehow I always grouse that none of the Jewish books appeal to me...

Who wrote Search my Heart?

Thanks for reminding me about Family for Awhile. It makes me cry. Crying So painful and gorgeous.

Reminds me of

I can Call you Ima by Leah Fried
And
Safe Spaces by Tehilla Peterseil

I remember reading these books when I was ~10 and bawling through them.

These were some of my favorites as a tween. A Safe Place had me crying cover to cover, too. Another tear jerker for me at that time was If Only. It was about a girl who's mother was sick. The cover had a girl sitting up in bed in a dark room with her arms wrapped around her knees. I couldn't look at the cover without crying.

fiction - Sun Inside of Rain
non-fiction - Ethalech
Holucaust - Go My Son
YA - Legacy of Gold by Raphael Sackville, and most of the Avner Gold series
cookbook - The Plain and Simple Family Cookbook
short stories - Generation to Generation

Hebrew fiction I wish they would translate - all of the books by Libby Klein - they are absolutely amazing!

M. Kenan doesn't do fairytale endings. It didn't bother me so much but I do hope there is some resolution in future books, some character who figures out what Yekavel was doing on that mountain and the lives he saved.

I don't know where to begin so I haven't even tried, but I loved Legacy of Gold. I remember talking to someone who said it was so predictable but I didn't see it coming. I didn't get off the sofa that Shabbos till I finished reading it.
