When DH was in kollel I was so surprised when our Rosh Yeshiva told us our mitzvah of maaser begins only after our basic needs have been met.
I dont think we paid maaser for years. I felt guilty for a while and kept asking him "are we still not supposed to give maaser" and he kept reassuring us "you're doing what Hashem wants".
BH now we give. But it was an interesting lesson to learn. Sometimes something may just not be your mitzvah at the moment. (Obviously everyone should ask their own Rav)

I am happy to hear all these inspirational stories
However, my husband spoke to 5 very big poskim in Lakewood.
They all told him , write down everything you need to live and THEN take maasar
If you first give maasar then take tomchi shabas or tuition breaks it's s mitzvah haba b avera

op- I think what everyone else is saying about asking a rabbi is a good idea. Just something to consider, I heard that even just the act of seperating maaser is powerful even if afterwards you use the money.
